The way she looked at him made Derek smile, getting the hint his suggestion had taken her by surprise. Talking about what bothered him, what stressed him out, what he felt, what kept him awake most nights–none of it was Derek’s forte. He preferred to bottle things up, to hold it all deep inside, the outcome of sharing something he truly feared. Listening was a different story however, the born wolf having no problem with being there for someone he cared for, much preferring to have someone satisfy their need to unburden with him than feeling forced to talk about his own things. And in this occasion, there was also the fact he was looking for information, even though now that he was standing in front of Caroline, that was not the priority.
He cared for her, and he wanted to help.
“I’ve always preferred listening,” he said, approaching the blonde. “Besides, things aren’t exactly usual between us anymore.”
It wasn’t as if she had difficulty sharing. In most cases, she preferred to unload & deal ( of course, there would always be special circumstances where dealing was just too hard to take right away— but this wasn’t one of those times ), but she also was equally a good listener. While she appreciated that Derek was the same on the listening front, she hoped he knew this was going to be opening a door to her bringing up the same question at a later point for him. He was the one with the difficulty sharing out of the two of them. He had already taken a step forward by finally accepting & acknowledging his feelings. She could take it one step at a time, as long as it happened in the end. Any pushiness mostly came from impatience.
❝ I’m not really sure anything is usual about this town anymore. — But I’m taking that as a good sign that you haven’t changed your mind at this point. ❞
So maybe she still needed a little bit of reassurance. That comes with the territory of dating someone who initially rejected you & struggled with whether or not this was something he wanted to dive into. She knew it was all him, not her, but part of her was still waiting for the rug to be ripped from under her feet.
