5 days to go...

I’ve never been so tired in my life and I haven’t even started the school year yet. When you’re in the middle of setting up your classroom and moving house at the same time it feels like you’re just swapping one bomb site for another!

When I walked into my new room I felt so overwhelmed - I didn’t know where to start. But every hour I spend working away I feel more and more ready to start teaching next week. Just a few more bits and pieces need to come together until it’s all done!

Oh my god.

You guys. This picture book that just came in.

It’s an adorable story about a little “narwhal,” living with a narwhal family under the sea, but take a closer look.

Over the following pages, Kelp struggles to fit in. Kelp is different in so many ways; nothing ever feels fully right. Eventually, by pure chance, Kelp happens to get blown off by a stray ocean current and winds up on the ocean surface, where a remarkable discovery is made.

Um. Wow.

And despite their nervousness…

Hurray! And then the question:

I’m dead. This book killed me. So much perfectness was never to be survived. Kelp, I love you.

(And you, too.)

And yes, I realize that it could just be a lovely story about a narwhal, not a metaphor for anything bigger, but isn’t that the beauty of all the best sorts of books?

12 days to go...

In twelve days I start my first year at school as a teacher. It’s hard to believe that only a year ago I was getting ready to start my post-grad for teacher education - getting all my supplies together to learn how to teach. And now, a year on, I’m getting ready to set up my very own classroom. Eeeeeek!!

I’ve started this blog to keep track of my professional development throughout my first year of teaching and to share my experiences. I’m unbelievably excited to get started on this new chapter of my life (ugh, that’s so corny) and I can’t wait to share what I learn.

types of study breaks for every situation

if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.

if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stair at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.

if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.

if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.

if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.

if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.

if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.

if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.
