Miis Are Making a Comeback!
Well, sort of. There aren’t going to be any new mii games, Miitomo is not making a triumphant return. However, Miitopia is being released on the switch this May! This is one of many ports that were announced during Nintendo’s direct yesterday. It’s no surprise that people are a bit disappointed, upcoming releases like Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 went unmentioned, the Kid Icarus franchise continues to be neglected, and so on. Since COVID-19 has everyone working remotely, I’m grateful to see anything coming out. Especially a port of one of my all time favorite games!
That’s right. Miitopia is one of my favorite games. I said it. You may be wondering to yourself, why? Honestly, there’s a lot of things I love about it. If you’ve never played it before and you like turn based RPGs, I would absolutely reccomend it. I love being able to customize not just myself, but all of the characters. Many of the class options are unique and unlike other RPGs, Chef for example, or Popstar. Cat is my favorite. Also, the soundtrack is so fun and unique. I’m so attached to the game, that I refused to delete my old save file. I actually recently just bought another copy of the game to play it again. Now I’ll have 3!
This game really is designed for multiple play throughs. You can change out your characters to brand new ones, change up your classes, etc. It’s a shame there aren’t multiple save files. Tomodachi life on the other hand, gets very repetetive very fast. I can see why Nintendo would choose to put Miitopia on the switch instead, even though I understand why some people are unhappy. One positive aspect of this is if Miitopia gets good sales, Tomodachi Life might get rereleased as well. On the other hand, Tomodachi Life does have homophobic aspects to it, so I can see why Nintendo would want to stay away from it. The ideal solution would be to just allow the game to have same sex marriage but I don’t know how likely that is. Fire Emblem did it, so it’s not impossible. But Nintendo only publishes Fire Emblem, they didn’t make it. Since it could be controversial, I think Tomodachi Life is most likely going to be condemned to death on the 3DS.
Just because Tomodachi Life isn’t likely to come back, things aren’t all bad. The game isn’t just being ported, it’s being revamped. One of my favorite parts of Miitopia 2016 is when you get to ride Dominic the Dragon. He’s so cute! Now, you’ll have the option to recruit a horse to your party. Not only can you use your horse to get around faster, you can also level up your friendship level as you would with any other mii. The horse can even help you in battle! As an animal lover, this only adds to my excitement for the game.
One aspect of the trailer that I didn’t like is that the miis definitely look different. There are new options to customize them, like makeup and wigs. But I’m honestly not a huge fan of how they look. The design looks worse than the original game to me. I could just be nostalgic about the old miis. I think the more I see of the game, the more I’ll get used to it. It’s hard to say whether there’s actually a problem or I’m just imagining it. The more I rewatch the trailer, the better I feel about it. There’s only ninety seconds of footage so far so it’s hard to say for sure.
So what do you guys think about Miitopia? I imagine a lot of “real” gamers can’t be bothered but there’s also loads of people who are excited. Do the new miis look weird? Do you like the makeup and wigs? How awesome is the horse? What other changes do you think Nintendo might make? Will they be good or bad? Feel free to reblog with your own ideas.
