I put it in the tags on the post I reblogged but I wanna make an actual post— the reason Will is expected to keep “proving himself” as a hockey player is literally homophobia/misogyny. People don’t view him as manly enough. He is being expected to perform masculinity to prove himself to them. They refuse to accept that someone can be not traditionally masculine and still perform excellently in their field (and I’m not even saying that’s Will, he’s literally a man and an athlete and for all intents and purposes masculine as hell). It’s misogyny. It’s toxic masculinity. It’s a narrow view of how masculinity must be performed in society for someone to be deemed worthy of respect.

why is will smith hockey the only player in the entire nhl who always has to prove something ???

in the off season he has to prove he's dedicated by proving he's training and prove he's going to the gym and he's not allowed to do anything fun because that means he doesn't care so he constantly has to prove he does and in season he has to prove his place on the first line and prove he deserves a place on the team and prove he's a good player and prove he's not just there because of mack and so on
