I like to think of Hector and Achilles as two sides of the same coin 🤔 and I could probably write a way longer post about their parallels than about their dynamic lowk ... but I also don't think in a universe where Patroclus never dies they'd be friends because of this.... I think they're both such a glaring embodiment of the other's negative traits that they would never be able to ever get along, I wouldn't say hate but like they wouldn't be like besties to me... and do not mistake this as me saying they could never work as a ship because I'm mainly saying this since I want them to be toxic yaoi and I lowk want them to want to fuck the other so bad that they hate themselves for it BECAUSE IT'S FUNNY !!!!!
Anyways but like in the context of the Iliad itself I like to think they would respect each other as skilled fighters to an extent while still not liking each other in the slightest cause well... they are enemies after all… because like Achilles doesn't seem to have that much of a problem with the Trojans before Patroclus' death? He says himself that they never did him any wrong. He's lowk just in this fighting the Trojans game for glory so I can see him respecting Hector from afar as a powerful warrior and I think Hector could do the same for him(but if you put them in a room they WILL fight and Achilles will always be the one leaving that room)
I don't always interpret them this way but I've kind of said a lot of nothing so I wanna share this too 💔 I really like the idea of them having this very odd fascination with one another. And I don't mean respect like I said before I mean closer to like. Obsessed. IT'S JUST THAT THEIR FATES ARE SO CLOSELY TIED TOGETHER THAT LIKEEEE IMAGINE YOU DIE ONLY WHEN YOUR ENEMY DIES AND BECAUSE OF THIS ACHILLES KILLING A HECTOR WHO'S DRESSED IN HIS ARMOUR CAN LOWK BE READ AS HIM COMMITTING SUICIDE… but that's beside the point anyways idk this is just a weird way I like to read them. Also why is there at least one version of Hector killing each of Achilles’ boyfriends… like I think he may be a little obsessed with Achilles other than him deciding to steal his clothes… kill Achilles’ boyfriend once shame on you Hector kill Achilles’ boyfriend twice shame on Achilles why does he keep letting this happen kill Achilles’ boyfriend thrice AND steal Achilles’ clothes from him. okay Hector do you want to be Achilles’ boyfriend instead?? (This last bit is a joke)
Okay so this is actually a bunch of nothing I'm just realizing that because like while I do love hechilles I've been more oresteia-pilled than iliad-pilled these past few months and can't think about the iliad on command but I also felt bad leaving this in the drafts for so long… you can shoot me oomf it's okay I'm sorry… 😢
