Hi, I’m MJ!

I’m a writer, dancer, player of better musician’s songs.

I’ve been writing since I was little and have completed three first drafts in my life. Currently working on the fourth.

My dream is to be a traditionally published author. I dabble in many different genres and settings, but love to include a bit of magic in everything I write. I want explore politics, class, and social issues through my writing. I write about wars but not battles.

Discovery writer at heart, outliner by necessity.

Thoughts on what to do with things you don’t want to publish but would let other people read?

I have a first draft that I thought was not that great but I’m rereading it now out of curiosity and I actually don’t think it’s that bad. I don’t really want to take the time to clean it up so much that I would try and query it but still want to put it out in the world for other people to enjoy.

What would you recommend for putting out novels you’re not interested in trad or self publishing?

I'm the girl who gets paid to give tragically foreshadowing names to scifi space program missions. my first ever job was naming a colony "troy", still proud of that one. yea you'd never guess what happened to it. years long orbital siege, oof. uhh sent off a solar probe called the "Icarus", yea it melted. oh! pair of colony ships called the Romulus and the Remus, no prizes for guessing. it's a pretty good job really. still no space elevator tho

Lately I’ve been struggling to comprehend that the costumes from the Barbie movie do not live rent free in the minds of everyone else like they do in mine.

I am, of course, the owner of the pink Barbie Cowgirl costume from the movie and wore it for halloween, BUT I have been able to repurpose the outfit for other events that involve disco, pink glitter, or cowgirl themes. Everytime I wear it not a single person notices that it’s a Barbie costume!

I’m out here fully dressed like

and not a single ounce of recognition!

Bring Barbie back to the forefront of pop culture please

Lesser-known steps of the writing process:

Finding all the paragraphs where you used some hyper-specific word more than once

Rearranging paragraphs that you swear you wrote in the right order but turned out to be totally backwards

Going for a walk, coming up with the perfect line, and forgetting it as soon as you get home and open your laptop

Creating a separate document where you can dump all of those nice sentences that no longer fit in anywhere

Waking up in a cold sweat because so-and-so was supposed to be barefoot but never actually took his shoes off

Writers- how do you layout your pieces?

Strict - outline first, fill everything out later

No outlines (fuck it, we ball)

Write down random scenes in my head, worry about plot later

Some combination of the three
