“Your rhythm was a little off at the end there, sweetheart,” Hyoji commented with a smile, tucking her hair behind her ear. It wasn’t often that Seok came to her for advice or help with his rapping--damn kid was too prideful--so when he did, she treasured it. She loved spending time with him and often felt very inclined to keep a close eye on him (for good reason, too), so she was always down to give him tips. “D’you think there’s a metronome app? I learned how to do faster raps using a metronome to pace myself--I think it’d do you well, buddy.”

Somedays Teddy couldn’t be bothered for human interaction, let alone full-blown conversations and today was one of those days. “What were you saying?” He asked, looking at the other for a few seconds before looking up and following something as if it were flying away, “Oh dear, the amounts of fucks I give seem to have left me.”

“Take your attitude and shove it up your butt,” the manager replied with an eyebrow raised, looking up from her phone. “I don’t care how much you don’t want to do this variety show. You already said you would. Be a professional and suck it up. And get used to it. You’re going to have to do a lot of things you don’t really want to in your career--this is just the start. Now get in the damn car so I can drive you there.”

Sitting on the floor of the practice room Benji sighed running a hand through his hair taking a sip of water. He wanted to practice away from the dorm so had left his members behind to come to the studio. “nal baraboneun siseoni neukkyeo jilttae, dora bomyeon eonjena nega seo isseo” he sang out his section of their song A not realizing the door had been opened.

She was trying to keep tabs on all the boys--their live broadcast was hours away, but with the mess that was Wonderland, Hyoji found it was smart to be ready as soon as possible. With a group containing the likes of Brandon, Kaili and Teddy (often when they were interacting too), she never knew what would happen. She knew where everyone was but Benji, so she’d gone to find him, smiling as she leaned in the doorway, listening to him sing. “Save some of that talent for the camera, kiddo,” Hyoji said with a smile, making her presence known.

“You basically are a mum– and good, you better or else I’ll feel like you’re picking favourites out of us.. if you are I should be at least second on that list.” He threw in casually, letting a quiet laugh slip out even if he was still a bit annoyed at this anyway. “You’re telling me not to be up in Brandon’s business when he’s as much in mine as I am his? Noona, it’s never not going to happen. I don’t think we’re even, but alright. At least I go to my sessions now more than I did before we debut. If anything he’s the opposite. Now that we’ve debuted, he doesn’t.” He shrugged at the next part. “Well, that’s pretty weak ammunition to pick me apart with, but fine.” He nodded at the next part, just continuing on in what he was doing even though the whole scaling thing was pretty much ingrained in his head by now. Though he had to admit that he did muck it up a fair bit through not taking it seriously.. not that he’d admit that one.

Hyoji snorted. “Oh please. You’re all little demons--how can I pick a favorite demon when you all make me want to pull my hair out?” she teased. “I’d never pick favorites. But, if I did, neither of you would be my favorite. Sorry. You boys both cause me a lot of trouble.” She was joking, of course--a large grin making that quite clear. “I tell him off for it too. Both of you need to mind your own business, and worry about making your own sessions instead of tracking when they other misses theirs. Yeah? You know who goes to all their sessions? The rest of the group. I won’t be satisfied until you’ve joined their ranks.” Hyo sighed. “Don’t care. I won’t have them going after you. It’s not just part of my job as your manager--I don’t want them coming after you more than they ultimately already will. Not happening. So no letting your vocals slide.” She settled into the chair, raising an eyebrow. “Wait, pause for a moment--do that last one again. You were flat.”

Despite being young adults themselves, the job of a group manager meant that the pair had to act mature for ninety percent of their time.  They were professionals, and of course they acted as such while on the job, but even in their time off, they had to look after their groups.  They were responsible for quite a lot, and as a result, they had to be very careful of how they behaved around others.  But when they were together, Misook and Hyoji were able to let loose, to put down their walls and set aside their maturity to just have fun.  And as a result, the two had a record of acting like dumb teenage girls when they were together.

“You always have the best ideas, bored or not.”  With a nod of her head, the blonde set aside the dishes, drying off her hands as she moved to collect her phone off of the table.  She gave the other a small smile, feeling a bit guilty, “But, you’re the guest… I mean, if you really want to, I won’t stop you from cleaning for me.  Just know that you don’t have to.”  Peeling her eyes away from her friend, she quickly began researching classes at the local family center.

Because of her choice of career and when she had chose to begin it, Hyoji grew up pretty fast. Sometimes she felt like she was kind of stuck in a perpetual adolescence because of it,. Sure, she could be professional and mature and grown up when she needed to be, but whenever she got the chance, she was lounging around and goofing off--maybe that’s why she got along with Wonderland so well. Deep down, she acted exactly like they did. She was happy Misook was someone she could be a dopey not-teenage girl with. It was refreshing.

“Touche. I mean, some of my best ideas have been spur of the moment and everything. I think the trick is just to not think about it too hard.” Hyoji stretched her extremities, shaking her head as she went to the sink to finish the dishes off, pushing up her sleeves as she went. “I think I stopped being a guest about the billionth time I came over. Now I practically live here in my spare time. Don’t worry about it. I want to help out,” she replied, starting on a second bowl and trying to shrug her hair out of her eyes as she washed.

Flitting around her kitchen, cleaning up after quite the large lunch that she had prepared for the two of them, Misook let out a soft hum in agreement.  She couldn’t imagine anything else for the pair to do in her apartment, unless it happened to be taking a nap or watching television.  And they had already watched television an hour ago.  

She busied herself with washing out a bowl, listening to the elder ramble about their limited possibilities.  Every chance the two of them got, they were hanging out together.  Hyoji was her best friend, and they couldn’t help but goof off when they were around one another.  Over the years, since they had met, they had tried out just about everything under the sun, aside from maybe sky diving and art classes… which just so happened to be what the elder came up with for today.

A wide grin graced her features, the younger manager glanced over her shoulder with an enthusiastic nod of her head.  She hoped that her face wasn’t completely flushed by the comment her friend had made about wanting to paint her.  One of her younger sisters was an artist, but she had never actually tried her hand at it herself.  Maybe she would find that she liked it.  And even if she didn’t, it still gave her a reason to spend an extra hour or two by Hyoji’s side.  “Yeah, okay!  I think it sounds fun! There’s a family center a few blocks from here.  They have classes all the time.  Want me to look and see what they have for today?”

She liked watching movies and stuff with Misook, but her favorite part about their friendship was the spontaneity that came along with it. While they had their more peaceful, laid back moments, one of them could suggest something crazy at any time, and the other was thrilled and went right along. They were both responsible grown women and of course they acted as such, but it was nice for an opportunity to let her wild side out, and Misook gave Hyoji that opportunity. There was no judging and disapproving glared, just giggles and more chaos, and it was fantastic.

Standing up off the chair and shaking her bright purple hair back in place, Hyoji grinned. “It does, doesn’t it. I come up with my best ideas when I’m bored,” Hyoji replied, feigning arrogance with a little laugh. “Yes, awesome! I can finish up with the dishes if you want to check? There’s not many left. Besides, I feel bad for sitting on my lazy ass while you did all the work. Let me do a little bit, yeah?”

Hyoji was half hanging off of one of Misook’s chair in boredom. She had a day off and so did her best friend, but here they were sitting in her kitchen. “Let’s do something,” Hyo finally said, grinning a little in Misook’s direction. Leave it to Hyoji to come up with something spontaneously to avoid the boredom, right?

“We did karaoke last week......We’ve been on tons of walk....we’ve been to eighty billion take-out places.....we’ve seen so many movies,” Hyo listed, trying to think of something new. Finally it came to her, a giant grin appearing on her face. “Oh, god. Misook, we have to take an art class. I want to paint a picture of your face and I can’t paint for shit, so therefore we have to. It’d be so much fun! What do you say?”

It was probably a good thing that Hyoji could catch them out in their lies honestly, proved she was a good manager from them. “Fine, good. Be worse on him, he deserves it. Does he actually listen to you though?” If he didn’t listen to his coach, using aegyo instead, it made him wonder a little. “I haven’t missed as much as him though– why does it matter anyway? I’m not a main or a lead vocal anyway, it’s not like my voice matters in comparison to the rest.” He sighed, coming back a moment or so later with the bottle in hand. “Scaling. To loosen the vocal chords.” Kaili wasn’t exactly sure how well this would go with the tiredness though, but he did his best, going on to repeat exercises that he basically knew by heart at this point with how often he went through them.

She chuckled, rolling her eyes at him. “God, I feel like such a mom, jeez. I’ll discipline him and you separately. It’ll happen. I don’t need either of you prodding me to do it, and I don’t need advice on how. I love you both but you don’t need to be all up in each other’s business,” she said with a grin. “No, I think you’re both pretty even. It does matter, though. Every voice matters. You’re still an important member of the group. And the last thing you want is some netizen trying to pick you apart and using that as ammunition. Alright, work on your scaling then. I’ll stop you if I have any tips or tricks or something.”

“You know what I mean, noona. I knew you’d get all…..overexcited and make me talk about it and stuff and I don’t wanna  talk about it. I mean, I will now because you made me bring it up, but…” he trailed off, sighing. Seok shrugged. “I mean….he might have. But there’s also the possibility that he wouldn’t so…….No, I haven’t. Because I’m not supposed to talk about it—we agreed on that. Plus she’d ignore me.”

“How can you expect me not to get excited about it?” Hyo chuckled, shaking her head. “My little boy is into a girl and she’s into him. I’m super excited, kiddo.” She rolled her eyes to show him that she was joking. “I’ve talked to him about other things. Don’t ever tell him I even mentioned it, but he doesn’t like her. I promise. No, I don’t think so. I think she’s into you and trying to avoid it, just like you’re avoiding it.”

“Cuz I knew you’d be like this about it,” Seokjung whined, trying to wriggle away from her half-heartedly and failing. “It’s weird because we’re supposed to hate each other and fight. And I’m pretty sure she likes Brandon, not me. It’s….it’s just weird, okay? I….I don’t know what to do about it.”

“Like what? Super interested in your life? Wow, how dare I,”  she said sarcastically, wrapping her other arm around him too so she had him in a tight hug. “You’re supposed to? Is this some kind of rule I don’t know about or something. Oh, honey, I don’t think Brandon likes her. You know Brandon--he definitely would have told her. Have you talked to her about it yet?”

“I don’t want to ask him, he scares me. What if he is a pirate and he’s offended by the question and he tries to hurt me? What then? I’ll be in trouble. It’s not worh the risk,” he said earnestly.

“How about I ask him for you then, huh? that way if things go wrong, he’ll just be mad at me. But I can promise you that he’s not a pirate, and he won’t hurt you. I promise you. Cross my heart and hope to die.”

He sighed deeply, resting his head on her shoulder and making himself small so he could hide under her arm and rest there–it was difficult as he was so much bigger than her, but he was determined to be comforted by her, and to him, this was what that meant. “I didn’t think you would. It’s just…yeah.” Sighing again, he muttered, barely audible, “I kissed Ahki. A bunch of times. And I think I liked it. And it’s weird.”

She snuggled him close, kissing the top of his head and rubbing his back softly. He was really worked up, and she was worried, but when she heard what was going on, she tried to hold back his laughter. “So you’re all torn up like this over a girl? C’mon, buddy--why didn’t you just come to me right away? So what’s weird about it? I think kissing a girl and liking it is plenty normal, kiddo. It happens.”

Misook gave the elder a tight squeeze as soon as she was embraced, “We’re a match made in heaven.”  Without having to say it out loud, the two knew just how much they needed each other. They kept one another on track, helped each other through any issues, and were always there for each other when they needed to relax.  It was a close friendship that didn’t need words to describe it. “You have no idea how much I’m looking forward to this,” the younger let out a loud laugh, excitement bubbling out of her.  “One of your songs!  And a cover!  Spoil me and do both!  I want you to spend the whole night serenading me.”

“Heck yeah we are. Destined to be together, girlfriend. Ride or die,” Hyo said with a nod, grinning happily. She took her best friend’s hand, letting her lead the way--she honestly wasn’t quite sure where the karaoke bar was, so it was good that Misook knew the way. “Same, okay. When was the last time we went out like this? Forever ago. Not since my boys debuted at least. This is long overdue.” Hyo nodded happily. “I’ll do both, then. Show off for you. Be prepared--you might be blown away.”

“I will noona, trust me.” Teddy said, nodding a little as a smile continued to spread itself across his face. Hyoji had quickly become a mother - or elder sister - figure in his life so small moments where he found himself smiling or when she gave him advice were ones that he had learnt to cherish. He was all too aware about how quickly good times could disappear and he had made it a self goal to limit that as much as possible, “I won’t let you, myself, or the group down noona.” Teddy couldn’t help but bow somewhat. It was, admittedly, half assed but he was positive that it was the thought that counted. “I may be able to look past it - just don’t expect me to be wearinga purple cat onsie come Halloween.” He stuck out a tongue as he joked. “That sounds like a good plan to me.” Teddy agreed, nodding quickly.

Hyo had been on her own for most of her life. She had no siblings. She had been her own producer, her own manager, her own songwriter, her own promoter. She had been happy with that, too. She was strong and independent. Now she had seven boys relying on her, and honestly, it was something she never knew she had been missing, but she couldn’t live without now. She loved all of them so much. Like her own kids. Or brothers....something in between. “I know you won’t.” She wrapped her arm around his shoulder, squeezing gently. “No, I don’t. But for twenty dollars, I’ll wear one,” Hyoji offered with a laugh.
