Gender Dysphoria ≠ Body Dysmorphia
Back again to remind you that gender dysphoria is not body dysmorphia!
I keep seeing posts about the debate of what “"qualifies someone being trans”“ and most of them are dumb, we all know that, but a lot of people really don’t know there’s different terms to describe what y'all are posting about! Let’s learn!
Body Dysmorphia: an obsession that one’s physical appearance is severely flawed
Gender Dysphoria: the distress a person experiences as a result of the sex and gender they were assigned at birth
They are not the same thing.
Medically speaking, yes, you do need gender dysphoria to be transgender, because simply speaking that is what the definition of transgender is. Not identifying with the sex and gender you were assigned at birth.
You do not need body dysmorphia to be transgender.
It is very common for trans people to have body dysmorphia because of their gender dysphoria, but no, not every trans person has body dysmorphia. It is a mental disorder, just like depression is, and not every trans person has that either! (That’s also very common though!)
They do, however, have gender dysphoria. That’s what being trans is.
Thank you for taking the time to educate yourself or someone else! :)
