thinking about how the ending of the game was foreshadowed through the music. the title track in the OST is based on farewell. you play that same melody when you play the instruments, the tragedy of this story looming even in its most peaceful moments, because vincent knows it will fall apart but lets himself get indulge in that friendship.
thinking about how the other tracks don't take the melody from farewell, but rather are inherently linked by it, that same theme interwoven throughout the whole game.
thinking about how that melody is one inherently of betrayal and death. how from the title screen, we immediately hear it. how the story from the very start is defined by this theme. leo is betrayed over and over again, and as a direct result, gary dies, harvey dies, vincent dies. the rest of the soundtrack doesn't take from farewell; everything, from the beginning, is built on the basis of this theme. this tragedy has happened before, and will inevitably happen again. it is not an event within the story, it is the very foundation on which the story is told.
thinking about how the melody does not belong to the end of the game, or the twist and subsequent death we associate it with. it belongs to the entire story and all of its contents, because it is all defined by this theme. that's why we hear it on the farm. why we hear it when leo visits his family and alex runs away from him, when he promises linda he'll make it back alive. why we hear it when vincent meets his daughter for the first and last time. that’s why we hear it the track “a way out”. that’s why we hear it on the title screen.
thinking about how this is this game's identity, from the very start. in every quiet moment we are reminded of this tragedy, because these quiet moments are what make the tragedy. we see them living and breathing, breaking things and putting them back together, but all of it is impermanent from it's very conception. it’s fucked up.
listening to homestead and hearing fragments of farewell & a way out played by the melancholic banjo and piano
i'm going to say something insane. i think the overall pronounced fandom cultural slide away from complex plotty violent work and towards kidfic and coffee shops AUs and cozy domestic romcoms is a symptom of fascism.
okay actually this is a great phrase for it
Reblogging this for the term "neopastoralism", because I think that's fantastic.
Coffee shop AUs are, like... fine. They're not my thing, but they're hardly going to end the world. We don't need to have a moral panic about people enjoying coffee shop AUs. I'm also not about to come for anyone seeking escapism in the current hellscape.
However, I do think it's interesting to examine the tendency within these AUs to project a sort of idyll onto the coffee shop: here is a whimsical place where you can spend time with your friends and potentially meet your true love; here is a world where the greatest dilemma you may face is choosing the right coffee syrup for a new beverage or sneaking your number onto that to-go cup without being obvious.
The fantasy of the coffee shop AU is divorced almost entirely from the reality of an actual coffee shop. There are no abusive, creepy customers or bosses; there is no mention of the barista's wages; we don't see the dishwasher sweating at their station, the cashiers' aching feet; the person whose job it is to clean the (customer-only?) toilets. These topics are Political and Depressing and Must Be Avoided, because Political and Depressing things are antithetical to this kind of escapism.
The coffee shop AU exists, not in a world without capitalism (because this is a setting where commerce is actively happening) but in a world where capitalism has no teeth: a world where capitalism somehow works. In order to be convinced and soothed by this fantasy, you must suspend your disbelief and avert your eyes. You must filter the coffee shop through a neopastoralist lens.
To me, there's something very uncanny about it.
I've made this observation before, but there's a distinct and strong correlation between "wanting simplistic, saccharine, and morally binary media" and "authoritarianism". It's not a 1 to 1, which is where a lot of people seem to misunderstand things; it's not "If you like fluff, you're a jackbooted authoritarian." Very much not. This is a pattern that grows up out of thousands--hundreds of thousands--of individual interactions, out of culture, out of a shift of perspectives on what is seen as the norm and what is seen as outrageous.
Individual people liking cutesy fluff? Not a problem. Thousands of people insisting that fluff is the only acceptable option and if you dare make them think and consider, you're the problem?
That's a Problem.
It's the shifting of norms in culture, and fandom is not an isolated bubble--it's a representative of larger trends. And the trend right now in our larger culture, especially in America, is authoritarianism. Authoritarianism that has gone past "creeping" and is now "prancing", "dancing", "galloping", or dare I say goosestepping. Of course that's going to have an impact on the cultural scenes, including fandom!
And there's a correlation in societies that want saccharine fluff and their own authoritarianism. I can point to numerous examples--Victorian England with the censored stories for children. The USSR with an entire kitschy style of stories and art. The USA before the rise of Trump with Thomas Kinkaid's art. And that's just scratching the surface.
The main point in bringing this up is to be aware of the trend, not to take it as a personal attack for enjoying fluffy stories.

DS9 raktajino mug. These are the mugs dispensed from the replicator, and you will occasionally see them in Quark’s. This makes me think that Quark’s has the Star Trek equivalent of a coca-cola freestyle machine in the corner.
Purple is used in all 7 seasons and Green is used in season 5 (6?) and on. Highwave is the company that made the originals for the show in a then-unreleased color now available on their website called “Deep Space Purple”. It comes with a lid (fascinating attachment structure, this is what the indents at the top are for) and between that, the shape, and its grippy base, it’s considered the first cup specifically designed as a commuter’s travel mug.
This wide base ceramic mug is almost impossible to knock over. Microwaveable safe & top rack dishwasher safe
——
In DS9, these mugs (with matching blue plates and teacups) come from the Replimat. Replimat is a portmanteau of “replicator” and “automat”. Automats were common in the late 19th and early 20th century. It’s a seating area with a wall full of cubbies that holds lunch plates behind little glass windows with handles on them. You pick the plate you want, put a coin in the slot by the window, and take your food to the seating area. It was cheap to run, because you didn’t need cashiers or wait staff and the automatic window machine was a relatively simple piece of equipment. They went out of business when you couldn’t get a meal for the value of a single coin anymore, because the cost of upgrading the machinery was too high.
This replica is from a PC mod company that does some stellar replica work. I don’t know why they’re doing mugs but that’s none of my business. They are hand-thrown, so there are minor variations but I have 3 and they’re all near identical. (Two are for morning coffee with my wife, one is to hold my rotary cutters at my cutting table because I think Garak would have the same on his)
It's the highly sought-after mug with an interesting shape and distinct color from that show about a space station in deep space. This ceram

This line. Mads, I'm gonna need you to be a worse actor for a second, ok bud? Because what. The look of betrayal on his face. The way his lip curls like a dog ready to bare its teeth. Lump in his throat. Swallowing back tears that were never supposed to see the light of someone elses eyes. Almost disgusted at himself for not only entertaining the idea of letting Will see inside of him, but actively giving him the looking glass and saying, "Here. This is me in all of my depravity."
He specifically says "I let you know me." He gave permission. Encouraged it. He wanted it. It's the human in him getting sedated. Put down. Bad dog or whatever.
This guy drives me insane because he knows what he is. Knows that what he does is "the most disgusting thing in the world" to others. But then some twitchy man is placed in his field of vision, and being the hawk he is, zeros in on him. For as smart as he is, as strategic and deadly, he still feels deeply. Maybe not in the same way Will does (obviously) but he still hopes. Still yearns. If he was devoted to a god he would've probably prayed about it too. But he didn't need a god. Didn't want one to confide in. He was fine on his own. Until Will.
I'm sure that he sees Will as some form of otherworldly light. Dark. Grey area. Whatever the vapid space between stars is called, he sees that in Will. That is Will.
Giving into human desires is beneath him. And yet he let his perfectly curated human suit be unraveled because he finally met the one person who could understand him. Finally met the person who he could hold a mirror to and see bits of himself in the reflection. And that mirror got shattered like a teacup. Seven years of bad luck or something.
Betrayal is an ache deep in your gut. Feels like your organs are being ripped out of you just like the rug beneath your feet. And you can only think about how foolish you were for wanting anything in the first place. Disappointment requires expectation and good lord was that man close to his own heaven on earth. An alter he would worship without prying eyes. A love that would shelter him. Cut him and hold pressure to the wound.
Jesus christ love is so fucking humiliating sometimes
Just wanna bring this back bc I'm yearning
