hey so filming people without their consent is weird. you know that right? filming people you don't know and they aren't aware of what you're doing is creepy. posting strangers online is fucking weird. we're too comfortable with doing it now for shits and giggles, chasing some sort of viral hit instead of reckoning with the fact that you posted someone who did not consent to their body and face being publically used.
we're being pushed these Meta Glasses as if mass surveillance of strangers is fun and normal! it's weird!!! there are already reports that people are using these to film women without them knowing and sharing it to communities who get off on this shit. who else knows who people are filming. these glasses with cameras are not obvious and that is dangerous.
Google already tried this shit a decade ago and it crashed and burned for all the reasons you are saying. I think that an argument could be made by Meta that people are way less concerned with being recorded (or at least are more used to it) now than they were ten years ago in general and they might even right. A second mover advantage.
Still, Google Glass didnât fail because someone got upset at being recorded but because there were people like lawyers and nurses wearing the things and accidentally recording private conversations. People recorded having sex by accident.
If Iâm walking down the street and someoneâs Meta Glasses records me⊠whatever. Idgaf. For starters, it is legal to record in public so they could do the same thing with their phone. It is rude but still legal.
It is not legal for a medical professional to record my chart to their personal device, though. Imagine a person recording jury deliberations. A lawyer recording the judge while they make a ruling in chambers. Even a person recording everything they see at a kink or swingers party, including the faces of all attending.
Iâm not sure of the legality of recording without permission in private residences but it sure as fuck is rude as hell and inappropriate. I would not want, say, my apartment complexes maintenance guy to be recording the inside of my apartment while he makes a routine repair. I donât have anything to hide but it is my private space and none of his business.
today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned danteâs sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, danteâs inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold danteâs exile.
The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.
His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing
so basically the five people who wanted to uphold his exile were in the right
think it's a deep consolation to know that spiders dream, that monkeys tease predators, that dolphins have accents, that lions can be scared silly by a lone mongoose, that otters hold hands, and ants bury their dead. that there isn't their life and our life. nor your life and my life. that it's just one teetering and endless thread and all of us, all of us, are entangled w it as deep as entanglement goes. v neat i think.
When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.

I thought at the time and still maintain that Victor's actions make perfect sense if you take the premise that he's just coming off an extended major depressive episode. this is EXACTLY the kind of behavior you would expect to see from someone who has categorically realized "I can't live like this any more" and has just been presented with an alternative that doesn't involve suicide
The key to a good BingLiuShen fic is to have Shen Qingqiu misread every sign because he refuses to believe he is in love with Liu Qingge (becauses Liu Qingge is straight and he is married), have Liu Qingge misread every sign because he is autistic, and have Luo Binghe be the only one aware of anything in their dynamic.

Schism? Schism today?
Wow, I didn't have "catholic schism" on my 2026 bingo card
Schism today
@heresylog
Just to be clear to anybody, especially in the USA because I know that Catholicism isn't as common there, this is not a cool rebellion against authority. While some traditionalist Catholics are purely interested in ecumenical things like the Latin mass, in the USA a significant portion of the movement for traditionalism is made up of violent antisemites. The "church's understanding of, and relationship with Judaism" they reference here is the idea that all Jews are not solely personally responsible for the death of Jesus
Yeah, so, do you know how unbelievably too conservative you have to be to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church? This isnât a cute little rebellion against the popeâs authority or a mild disagreement, itâs partially that but more importantly itâs because SSPX is hardline Latin Mass only, no religious freedom, women canât wear pants, oh, and Jews killed Jesus anti-Vatican II sect. Theyâre the kind of people who HATE the pretty minor changes to Mass and seem to believe in tradition for its own sake. In 1988, they consecrated bishops without the approval of the pope and were excommunicated, only for Pope Benedict 16 (I donât know the Roman numerals) give them a slap on the wrist and brought them back into the fold for the sake of unity. Decades later, they have the pure audacity to do it again, I suspect they either knew theyâd get excommunicated again and didnât care or were bold enough to assume theyâd get a different result. Either way, good riddance and I hope they learn their lesson this time.

âIt's not fair.â The little ghost kicks impotently at the chalk lines around her feet. âI ain't done nothing.â
I nod, setting down my chalk and spellbook. âIt does sound like there might have been a bit of a misunderstanding.â
âShe took against me, that's what happened,â the dead girl says with a scowl. She looks about fourteen, round faced and spotty, with whisps of brown hair peaking out from under her mob-cap. Her face and her crossed arms have a tell-tale bluish tinge to them. A cholera death.
âI been here for don't know how long and never gave any trouble. Nobody ever complained about me 'till her.â
âŠwell, that's not strictly true.
Number 12, Barclay Street has been attracting rumours of haunting since the mid nineteenth century.
Sounds of faint singing and crying in the corridors at night. Cold spots. Doors that open and close by themselves. Animals acting strangely. Harmless, mid to low-level stuff, typical for a bored teenage poltergeist.
Still, pointing that out isn't likely to achieve much, and certainly the most recent complaints of blood running down the walls, screams in the dark and paralysing night terrors seem distinctly out of character.
The ghost toes the chalk again, more tentatively this time. It stays resolutely unbroken.
She could get out if she wanted to. I'm not one of those assholes who brings out their full arsenal of wards and sigils for a first meeting with a level 2 spectre. The summoning circle will keep her in one place for as long as I need her to talk, but it wouldn't hold for a moment if she really fought against it.
I take it as a good sign that she's still here. Pouting or not, she's clearly willing to work with me.
âNone of the others could do this,â she says. âNone of 'em even saw me.â She looks up. âAre you here to exise me?â
âExorcise,â I say instinctively, and curse myself when she flinches. âSorry, no, no! I don't exorcise people from their homes without good reason, not if they're happy where they are.â
âI was happy. Till she started calling in all them ghost hunters.â
Mrs Delaney had been quite persistent in her attempts to 'fix' her haunted house. Most of the people she found were charlatans, of course, but I'd still arranged an appointment as fast as I could once word reached me. It wouldn't have been long before she happened upon somebody with Talent, and unfortunately not everybody in this field knows how to behave like a professional.
âI think we might be able to help each other,â I say, careful to keep my voice calm and level.
âDon't see how. Not unless you can exorcise Her.â
âNot quite what I had in mind.â I pull out my phone and scroll through my photos. âYou say that you're not the cause of the most recent incidents of paranormal activity?â
A pause. The ghost gnaws on her lip. I wait, patiently, keeping my body language open and nonthreatening. âI⊠I knocked her coffee cup over,â she admits at last. âShe was being mean and talking on her telephone, saying I done all these things when I never did! So I decided to show her what I could do if I wanted.â
âHmm.â The ghost eyes me nervously, as if expecting me to pull out a book, bell and candle and banish her on the spot.
âI only tipped it,â she adds. âI didn't break it or nothing!â
âYou shouldn't have touched it at all,â I say sternly. âBut⊠I can appreciate that you were frustrated, so let's say no more about it.â
The ghost looks relieved.
âMy point is,â I continue, âif you weren't the one making blood rain from the ceiling or tormenting people in their sleep, then what was? There's no other ghosts on the property.â I find the picture I was looking for. âYou can get anywhere around the house, right? Including behind the furniture and in the backs of cupboards?â
âYes'm.â
I hold the phone up so that she can see the picture on the screen. âI'm going to let you go free in a moment, and I need you to see if you can find anything that looks like this.â
The ghost wrinkles her forehead. âWhat's that when it's at home?â
âBlack mould,â I say, reaching out a foot to break the binding circle. âAnd I'm pretty sure it's the cause of this haunting.â
I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
Come to think of it, it really is insane that my entire country is burning alive and literally no one in the rest of the world cares. Thousands of Indians are dying every day from the heat, it's 45+ degrees in multiple areas, the government couldn't give two fucks, we're getting severe warnings and red alerts, and not a soul outside of South Asia is speaking about it because why would you ever care about brown people
please keep talking about how Becky from Maryland doesn't like the rising gas prices. It's clearly the more pressing issue.
USA folks, that is a consistent temperature range hitting 113°. Death Valley temperatures. In Banda, it hovered between 116°-118° (47°-48° C) for a week straight.
