We coin terms and make flags for the many communities we’re a part of, but mainly for the MOGAI and plural communities. We also reblog a lot of them! We may start taking requests in the future, but we aren’t for now. Feel free to leave us recommendations and ideas, if you like, but we might not use them at all.

We also will generally post about various topics related to our communities. If you’re queer, MOGAI, an alterhuman, a plural, neurodivergent, mentally ill, etc. then this blog is for you!

for anon! these terms are similar to idesheman and idesheturian and use the same top two stripes to represent maleness and middle stripe to represent ambition/desire (and potentially gender nonconformity/nonbinary identity depending on the user). the bottom two stripes are from/inspired by the femme flag and flamboric flag respectively!

Felt like experimenting with the idea of a spectrum to describe the phenomena of nonhumanity or related things, as only having labels to work off of has its pitfalls when so many overlap. And so, the KINsey scale was born. Intended to be used per each identity/kintype. Feel free to reply or reblog with your own personal codes! My bonobo type is 3E-F5orange (tho that does fluctuate a bunch). Further explanation of my reasoning behind this....

I can't help but notice there are millions of new terms being coined every week, because what we already have is clearly unsatisfactory for many. And the differences between a of the popular labels are very blurred and overlap a bunch, sometimes to the point of being functionally the same! For example the element of choice for otherkin however small, especially for the psychologically inclined, means you could be fretting about whether you're kin or otherhearted or otherlink or something else entirely. When it shouldn't matter that much. And with the more popular labels comes an implied hierarchy with classic otherkin/therian being at the top, and its cousins being lower down.

Classic otherkin especially, need to adhere to a particular narrative. Or else they're "delegated" to being hearted or something. To fit in. So increasingly I and some others have been thinking of ourselves as being "animal people", just animal people (replace animal with anything else that fits, fairy etc), a species first approach if you will. There are endless backstories and reasonings for why we are the way we are, but the result is the same. It allows for greater personalisation when you're like "I'm an x-person, and this is how". If your identity straddles the line between involuntary and voluntary, or if it was a sudden thing in your 30s rather than childhood, there's no pressure to pick a term and adhere to its norms. You're an individual and no less a real x-person than someone who has been struggling with something they've had no say in since toddlerhood. I'm a bonobo person, therian is the most convenient wordage but my backstory doesn't really tell you whether I really mean it, only how I got here. I don't always conform to the expected narrative.

Of course, I understand people also enjoy having labels, so I'm not hinting at removing them altogether. But spectrums supplementing those could be a viable compromise imo. I'm kinda dubious that we really need so many microlabels and umbrellas when it's already so muddy. It means you need to study what all of these are and have the memory of a computer in order to know wtf someone is talking about. If we prune that a little bit, it may allow for more legible communication.

ive been seeing a lot of words in some of the cointober posts that arent from the languages the coiner says they are

some languages dont have translations for certain words, like haunted and chocolate! for example, latin doesnt have a classic example of either of these words!

latin is a slippery slope, dont fall for the google results, because as a student of latin for over 2 years, i know when something is and isnt latin!

again this is /nm and /lh but like, yes, source ur words!

English ‘haunted’ -> Latin ‘uada’ ‘uada’ is not a word in Latin, but is only a word in one confirmed language, Mezquital Otomi, a native Central Mexican language, it does not mean ‘haunted’ there either. WordHippo and Google Translate say otherwise.

for example: english has the word “spring”

ask: which context am i talking about it in?

‘spring’ as in “hot spring?” -> fons (also means fountain)

‘spring’ as in “springtime?” -> vernus or ver

‘spring’ as in jumping? -> salio, salto

note: this is minor, but using the wrong term in a gender can become inaccurate if you’re trying to cite it. wiktionary has specific translation drop-down bars on common english words that allow you to find accurate definitions.

Please take OP’s advice! Be careful with your sources. We have some more general advice and lots of advice about Latin specifically, since we also study it:

Try to find more than one source. Referencing many different sources in general is always a good way to check that the information you’re getting is accurate.

Cite your sources! This isn’t strictly required, but at the very least explaining the thought process behind your term under a read more is extremely helpful. Not only does it provide context to your term and allow community archivists to record and preserve accurate information about it, it allows other people to let you know if you’ve accidentally made a mistake or used an inaccurate source. As wiki contributors, we would really appreciate it.

Many Latin sources, including ones that are otherwise perfectly good and helpful, mix up the letter “U” and “V” a lot. Most of the time they either replace all “U”s with “V”s or vice versa. There is a logical reason for this, but for the sake of linguistics and transliterating to English, it isn’t accurate. A big red flag is lots of Latin words that start with the letter “U” or that have the letter “V” in the middle of them, as that is fairly rare. You’ll know this is what’s happening if you see large chunks of Latin text that contain only the letter “U” without the letter “V” or vice versa. This is also one of the reason why multiple sources are important.

Like OP mentioned, there are many English words that are identical in spelling but have completely different meanings. However, the same can be said even more in Latin. Latin is, in terms of number of words alone, a much smaller language than English is, and has far more homonyms. Latin words can in many cases have five or more completely different English meanings. This is important in the context of using Latin words to create and English term because using a word with many different meanings can lead to confusion. Latin homonyms are often translated based on things like context, so you’ll have to pay attention to the other parts of your term when using them.

You don’t have to use foreign languages as a basis for your term at all. You absolutely can, and we certainly do sometimes. It can be fun and reflects the existing English language. However, especially if you’re a beginner, it’s important to know that there’s nothing wrong with just using English words, prefixes, suffixes, and roots to make your term! I might even say this is what we most commonly see. Creating a term while taking from foreign languages can be complicated, and you don’t have to do it to make a MOGAI term.

there are a lot of different neo-pronouns n not all of them are used exactly the same. i don't think i can explain every neo-pronoun in one post, but here are some examples on how to use some of the more common ones!!

xe/xem/xyr/xyrs/xemself

here's an example!! if you wanted to say:

"he wanted to go to the park so i went with him. his hat blew away. somebody found a hat and asked if it was his, but it wasn't, so he had to buy a new hat for himself."

using xe/xem pronouns, that would be:

"xe wanted to go to the park so i went with xem. xyr hat blew away. somebody found a hat and asked if it was xyrs, but it wasn't, so xe had to buy a new hat for xemself."

if you look up "how to use xe/xem pronouns" on the internet, you'll find lots of example sentences n probably some more in-depth explanations!! the same goes for any other pronouns you're not sure how to use yet.

here's an example!! to say:

"she likes flowers, so i gave her some. her vase was broken so she had to use one that wasn't hers. she was happy i gave her flowers, because she was too tired to pick flowers herself."

using ey/em pronouns, you would say:

"ey likes flowers, so i gave em some. eir vase was broken so ey had to use one that wasn't eirs. ey was happy i gave em flowers, because ey was too tired to pick flowers emself."

many people who use neo-pronouns also have a set of "aux pronouns", also known as "alternate pronouns". these are pronouns that they like less than their main pronouns, but are still comfortable with being referred to by.

for example, my main pronouns right now are "peach/peaches/peachself" but my aux pronouns are "they/them". if you just have with neo-pronouns, you may use the person's aux pronouns instead. however, if possible for you, it's best to use their main pronouns.

other common neo-pronouns you might want to research how to use:

fae/faer/faers/faerself

fae likes to take faer dog on a walk every day. once i offered to do it for faer, but fae wanted to do it faerself because the dog is faers.

ze/zir/zirs/zirself

ze likes to take zir dog on a walk every day. once i offered to do it for zir, but zir wanted to do it zirself because the dog is zirs.

it/its (not technically a neo-pronoun, but widely used)

it likes to take its dog on a walk every day. once i offered to do it for it, but it wanted to do it itself because the dog is its.

a common mistake made when using neo-pronouns n other non-standard pronouns is using apostrophes in the wrong places!!! for example:

“that is faers” is correct, “that is faer's” is incorrect.

“that is its” is correct, “that is it's” is incorrect.

“that is zirs” is correct, “that is zir's” is incorrect.

only use an apostrophe when there’s a contraction!! for example: faer’s late again. (faer is late again) it’s already gone home. (it has already gone home) zir’s not feeling very well. (zir is not feeling very well) ❁✿❁ noun-self and emoji-self pronouns:

noun-self pronouns and emoji-self pronouns are used as a form of self-expression. for example, somebody who feels like their gender is linked to or strongly identifies with clouds may use cloud/clouds/cloudself as their pronouns. sometimes people just use these pronouns because they think they’re cute, and that’s valid too. ❁✿❁ nounself pronoun examples: petal/petals/petalself petal really likes stuffed animals, so petal often buys them for petalself. what’s your favourite animal? petals is a penguin. bun/buns/bunself

Hey, this isn't dunking on people who like or use labels like this, but I think there's a bit of a push in online spaces to figure out every facet of your identity through intense self-introspection and increasingly obscure microlabels that just... isn't really necessary. If your gender or sexuality is stressing you out in a way that isn't beyond your control (i.e. dysphoria or facing transphobia/homophobia), just take a step back and realize that if no label ever clicks for you, you can just grab the nearest umbrella term and go. It's that simple. If you do see a more obscure label and go "Yesss, that's me!" good for you, but you literally don't have to.

You don’t have to label at all, either! You never have to label your gender, orientation, or anything else. There’s no rules that force you to. Labels exist to describe you in ways that feel productive, comfortable, and correct to you personally. If they aren’t serving you in any way, you don’t have to use them.

Label as much or as little as you like! There are truly no limits, in either direction. It’s all about what feels right to you.
