fuck off!!! im so mad at this comment that i can't even articulate why, all im seeing is red 😡
joshua graham, aside from FOUNDING THE LEGION with caesar, committed countless atrocities of his own accord. no one forced him to do them. he was burnt and thrown down a canyon because he lost a battle, not because of any guilt or regret. he didn't leave the legion, he was forced out. and what did he do after? he started quoting scripture and did all that again with the dead horses! this time with a little manifest destiny bullshit sprinkled in!!
ulysses, meanwhile, was a slave in the legion's slave army, forced to serve caesar after his entire tribe, culture, identity, and home were wiped out. he left the legion on his own when it was safe for him to do so. what wrongdoings has he done that he didn't do on pain of death, under caesar's name? what wrongdoings did he do that's on par with joshua graham's? what is his great sin, aside from asking the courier to confront the consequences of their actions??
Not that the broader strokes of your point about comparative guilt aren’t correct (they are) - and that you are aren’t correct about Joshua gram as a person (you are) or that you aren’t right about how Ulysses came to do what he did initially (you are)
But “what did Ulysses do aside from challenge the courier to confront their own actions?”
Attempted genocide via Nuclear Holocaust 2: Radioactive Boogaloo.
Would be the thing that comes to my mind. That’s uh. A damn bit more than you can justify as being “asking the courier to be accountable”.
And that? He 100% did of his own accord. Separate from the legion.
please note, for the record, that:
1. ulysses has the missiles aimed at dry wells and long 15, two military outposts for the legion and the ncr, respectively, not any majorly populated location
2. hitting one, or both, would not be unleashing a nuclear holocaust or causing genocide - it's to destroy strategic routes for either faction, making the war effort extra difficult for them
3. the choice to nuke one, or both, or none of these places is up to the courier
4. you can talk him down. with your words, by sympathizing with him, you can reason with him and have him realize what he's doing isn't the right way
5. ulysses is lashing out because of the trauma of his history - he was enslaved, his tribe was eradicated, and he was forced to perpetuate the legion's cycle of violence on pain of death. he is a desperate, suicidal man wanting to die, and wants to take down the forces that have hurt him down along with him for good measure
6. you can talk him down. you can de-escalate the situation. you can, and i cannot stress this enough, prevent the bombs from dropping just by showing a little understanding, a little kindness, a little grace
7. i am not defending what he attempted to do. it's bad. i acknowledge that. but it's not nuclear holocaust, it's not genocide, and it's not as horrible and terrible as what other fnv characters have actually done
thanks
@datura-tea this is such a good analysis. So many people just fundamentally misunderstand Ulysses and I can't tell if they're just confused, willfully ignorant, or actively malicious. He uses very deliberate language!! There's a reason he describes his plan as "cutting the throats" of the Legion and NCR. He's explicitly going for their throats!! In his own words!! He's not trying to murder everyone he's trying to destroy the trade networks and war machines of these vast nations. It's not good, but it's also absolutely the least villainous motivation of ANY antagonist in the game.

Pachucos are male members of a counterculture that emerged in El Paso, Texas, in the late 1930s. Pachucos are associated with zoot suit fashion, jump blues, jazz and swing music, a distinct dialect known as caló, and self-empowerment in rejecting assimilation into Anglo- American society.

Life for the Lone Wanderer is so brutal and lonely. None of the companions can really become your friend or are interested in being such. Two of them are slaves and one is a robot you own. None of them show much genuine positive feeling towards you except maybe Butch, and he bullied you violently throughout your entire childhood. Even your Mr. Handy robot (should you get the house in Megaton) is constantly making comments on how annoyed it is with you under its breath, which it can’t really do cause it’s a robot so the insults are definitely audible. Your only family left you and will eventually die in front of you for a cause he deems more important than you.
Even people who are nice to you want something from you and will try to extort you for it. Even the good people like Three Dog or Victoria Watts or the kind people like Moira or the people of Oasis constantly asking you for things, dangerous things, difficult decisions, you can never really catch a break. You’re trying to people please and help and feel some sort of, any sort of, connection to anyone because you are so, so lonely, all while dealing with this horrible new world you’ve been unwillingly and traumatically thrust into plus the loss of everything and one you’ve ever known.
Even Amata rejects you in the end. I can’t imagine the absolute devastation of knowing that you will never be allowed back home and that you have lost everything, every friend, every relationship, and no one is interested in fostering new ones.
There’s just nothing to cling onto for support, and did I mention throughout it all you are a 19 year old baby? Rough stuff
Remembering this tweet today. (For those of you who don't know, Josh Sawyer was the Project Director and Lead Designer of Fallout: New Vegas)
I've been playing some New Vegas again, therefore it was time for another Benny drawing 🙂↕️

Miss drawing New Vegas so much, but I haven't had the time to get back into it yet. I've been thinking about creating an OC for the game too
