Problems abound as their new captain, Dex, learns that the effortless balance Bitty maintained on the team isn’t as easy as it looks. Then, ultra-aloof Nursey must finally drop his “chill” and get vulnerable in a senior poetry seminar. And to make matters worse, Chowder faces the dreaded ‘SSGS’ and is having the worst season of his college career. But when change arrives at Samwell hockey, it not only threatens to rip the team apart, but could destroy Dex, Nursey, and Chowder’s friendship forever. Before they graduate, to save their team and themselves, the three seniors must come together and ask the question: ‘What does Samwell hockey mean to you?’

tbh my favourite dynamic for jaytim is the whole "i'm the dog they put in with the cheetah to prevent it going crazy" and "i'm the cheetah threatening to go crazy" except jason thinks he's the cheetah and tim is the dog but it becomes rapidly apparent at time goes on that tim is the cheetah and jason has to desperately wrangle him from destroying things he shouldn't

it's just unjust that animorphs never found a big fandom niche here because you all really need to go crazy about rachel/tobias with me for real among one billion other reasons

rachel is a pretty popular blonde girl pigeonholed as a confident mall rat until the war starts and slowly reveals her natural assertiveness to actually be a deep-seated bloodlust and vengeful rage that leads her to become a legitimately disturbing blood knight with a penchant for crossing lines none of the others are comfortable with crossing but which are maybe sometimes necessary to win an ugly war and the books do not shy away at ALL from her violent thoughts and desires, from the team's increasingly willingness/need to use her to do their unthinkable dirty work, or from how much her own nature scares her while she starts to wonder who she is without war.

tobias is the boy she falls in love with and by boy i mean hawk because he used to be a sweet-natured dork from a very broken home but he got stuck in "morph" (hence animorph) and now lives permanently as a red-tailed hawk which it is implied he did at least partially on purpose to escape his hellish home life. he struggles immensely with what humanity means to him anymore and how "human" he still is vs how much he is truly a bird of prey, for a number of reasons, including that in order to retain the power to morph and stay in the war he can never permanently become human again, and he has made the choice to keep fighting.

their love story is very tragic and star-crossed because tobias can only be human for two hours at a time and expresses frequently that he's no longer comfortable in his human body which means they can never truly be together. rachel wishes tobias would stay human, partly so they can have a normal romance but also because she wants to keep him safe and out of the war. he's not put off by her violent nature outside of concern for keeping her safe in turn nor does he try to use her for it unlike the others and he repeatedly risks everything to watch out for and support her. they are the only ones who see each other clearly including all the dark parts they scare themselves with and love each other for all of it. tl;dr she was a girl he was a bird can i make it any more obvious. did i mention the animorphs books are all free online
