Just finished "A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine, such a badass book... Loved every bit of it, wanted to sketch out the characters real quick. Mahit very quickly became one of my most favorite characters ever, such a crushhhhhhh

EDIT: Somewhere in the middle of A Desolation Called Peace I listened to a bunch of podcasts with Arkady Martine, and learned that stationers are based on armenians during the Bizantine empire period. Which kinda led me to rethink how I imagined Mahit (pale skin, reddish hair, etc.) Now thinking about drawing her differently. Funnily, though, I imagined Yskandr precisely as someone of more armenian/georgian phenotype.
