Absolution seeking is pretty interesting. It feels downstream of the punitive model of good/evil, as well as just how central moralism is. You seem to believe that you can "just be a good person" your way into a better world, and I'm sorry to tell you that that's just not true.

I think part of it is we are increasingly seeing the failure of moralism. As history progresses, such idealist models increasingly fail to do anything but reinforce the status quo. People see over and over that their "being a good person" did nothing and could not have done anything. Great "evils" plainly occur, yet entirely disconnected from "good". They don't know how or why, so they request absolution. Proof that they were actually a good person. It's all so rotten.

And we see entire ideologies built to reproduce a stubborn insistence on the idea that all you need to do is 'be good'. Which mostly seems to consist of no material action except perhaps believing the right thing or not buying the wrong thing. As the wheel turns, we will see these ideologies self destruct faster and faster. And out from their nuclear decay shoot particles of "i didn't mean it", "tell me i did nothing wrong", "it's not my fault" off into the distance.

The truth is: good and evil do not matter. Your harm minimizing greedy algorithm cannot get us out of the hole we've dug. At the end of the day, all that matters is winning.
