The real conflict in Smallville isn’t Clark vs Lex, it’s Lex vs the Narrative.

I’m not even being pithy here. We have a character that is Going To Become Evil. That is the information we have going in. Then he shows up episode one, he’s kind and hurting and being emotionally abused by his father and the whole town hates him and he keeps trying.

But he can’t win, because the pitch that got the show made depends on him Becoming Evil. It externalises the evil as something that happens to him, rather than the Lexes in other media who often start out as arseholes who only get worse. This Lex could have been good, but he’s not allowed. The narrative says from the get-go, without subtlety because subtlety is not Smallville’s strong point, ‘there’s darkness in him’. And then it shows us a kind and intelligent man trying to escape from his father’s control and says ‘that guy, there. Don’t you see it? He’s going to destroy everything. Why? Oh, because he’s Lex Luthor. The narrative requires it.’ And that's the fucking tragedy.

It’s so fucking funny that Smallville was like Lex and Clark should have lots of devastating background lore for Why They’re Like That Now, but Superman 2025’s Lex literally just saw that man and went bonkers crazy instantly. They haven’t even SPOKEN before the film and he CLONES HIM FROM STRAY DNA. It hasn’t occurred to him at all that Supes even has a secret identity, he just saw David Corenswet’s dimples and went what if we were nemeses. I think I’ll orchestrate a war to talk to him. I frequently think about Joseph making Jacob take some poor Eden’s Gate member under his wing. Someone so fragile and weak, a “lost lamb”, who he thinks has potential to be strong, if they just had some help. To Jacob’s reluctance, he looks at it like another experiment. No conditioning or bliss needed, just a malleable mind and a hypothesis. So he trains them separately from the recruits and Chosen. They stay in his room on a cot. There are no boundaries because shame is weakness. They end up his shadow, following his every move, doing as he says while he tells them they have their own independence from him. They just don’t take it. The Chosen at the Veteran’s Center doesn’t know what their relationship is like, they just know Jacob says jump and they don’t even say how high, they just do. They could be the strongest out of the entire Veteran’s Center, more than fit to be a Chosen. Jacob doesn’t group them in though. If he sends them out, it’s on his terms, it’s quiet, and he expects results without a single flaw. The Resistance doesn’t even know much about them besides the fact they’re glued to his fucking back and it’s a pain they can’t get a proper read on them. I live for the ambiguity of their relationship because from an outside perspective it could literally be anything.
