I love pointing out that you can tell when bethesda started hemorrhaging creative staff because important historical figures stop wielding spears and then they disappear from the games entirely

you can feel the disagreement in the creative direction of morrowind between the writers who think spears are cool and the actual game design which often scratches its head a little when it's trying to do something like figure out how a spear and shield could be wielded together, followed by their gradual disappearance in the expansions, and then they're just notably absent from oblivion's medieval-flavoured holy roman empire, which is still crawling with boars nonetheless
