Step one to adulting your finances is getting together an emergency fund.

Your fridge dies and all the food in it spoils.

You wake up in a lot of pain one morning. Cue the medical bills and missed work.

Your job evaporates without warning, or cuts your hours to practically nothing.

A family member passes away unexpectedly and you have to travel across the country for their funeral - and miss work to do it.

Your car suddenly needs a new whoosit whutsitmajigger. You also need a rental so you don't lose your job.

Your live-in BF/GF dumps you or turns abusive and you need somewhere to go, pronto.

Imagine going through these things with $2.17 in your bank account. Now imagine going through these with $2170 in your bank account. Before you spend another dime on something that doesn’t directly keep you alive or employed, you need an emergency fund.

Is Ellevest a scam? Not really, but it may not be the best option out there. Though they present themselves as a safe space for women to invest, a closer look reveals that their fee structure is twice as expensive as their nearest gender-neutral counterparts with no real difference in services, potentially costing women tens of thousands of dollars each over their investing lives. I would support Ellevest if they slash their fees to, at most, what their peers are charging. Otherwise, this investment platform for women is just a pink razor tax.
