Lawrence/Lomeli is such a wet paperbag of a man but in the later parts of the movie/book (especially the book) when we he becomes proactive and exercises his position and we can really see how he not only became Dean of the College of Cardinals but also just survived as long as he has in the Vatican. (E.g. how he gets Sister Agnes to agree to let him talk to Sister Shanumi, him refusing to let outsiders into the sistine after the explosion) All this while still maintaining such a gentle and caring soul deep down (e.g. praying for the cardinals as they voted for the last time) Lawrence/Lomeli the man that you are

He keeps sending his pet Monsignor to go snooping around for him, and when he comes back with intel half the time Lawrence says “no, don’t tell me… I mustn’t be influenced…” and then his Monsignor says “but your Eminence the tea is exceptionally hot today” and Larry pulls out his gay little cup and drinks that shit like a starving man at a feast who’s trying to pretend he’s only a little peckish
