Though disarticulated trilobite parts are a regular occurrence at the Massie Formation outcrops of Indiana, complete specimens of Spathacalymene nasuta––like the 2.5-in- (6.4-cm-) long example pictured here––are rarely found. With its pronounced cephalic rostrum and caramel-colored shell, this Silurian trilobite is among the most instantly recognizable species in the world.
