My positive thoughts on why I found the Good Omens finale satisfying:

I think it's important to consider that a good character based narrative is about the characters feelings, rather than the reader or the audiences.

Crowley and Aziraphale, while we as the audience have known them almost exclusively as a demon and an angel, have never been particularly good at their roles, nor was it their core identify. Their identities were based on how they rejected their roles, and embraced something else.

And what did they embrace? Earth and humanity. The things they found and chose to define them are the Bentley, the bookshop, food and drink, music, film, television, theatre, all very human creations. And the list goes on.

They always wanted to be human, and be together.

And that's the ending they got to have.

That's the only one there could have been, to close the circle of who they are as characters.

Neither Heaven incarnate, nor Hell incarnate.

But human incarnate.

mycroft during this dinner scene is so heartbreaking and interesting to me. he is acutely, physically distressed here, and particularly in these moments we see him flinching when silas and sherlock begin to get physical. it speaks volumes about his own childhood and they are not happy ones.

the scene where moriarty makes his first kill... how dónal manages to make it look like he's having a panic attack while also having some kind of violent awakening is beyond me. absolutely nailed the 'oh god what have i done wait i kinda like it' expression. what a guy.

what's so devastating about having Young Sherlock focus on Sherlock before he's a consulting detective and James before he's, well, an evil genius out to destroy Sherlock even if it will kill them both, is that James and Sherlock meet at their lowest emotional and professional points in the series. they see each other at their most abandoned and vulnerable, but it's actually Sherlock who is the most vulnerably open, because James very rarely gives anything away about himself or his history.

Sherlock, meanwhile, brings James everywhere and invites him to the most inner circle of his life. he even trusts him with his own mother. it makes the pit of my stomach churn watching it, because you can just see James filing away all of this information in the way he files away everything he learns about everyone -- it's how James has survived, by remembering everything about a person's situation and what their weaknesses are, because he's a person who has had to work upon weaknesses to get what he's owed.

at the same time, James is so devoted to Sherlock that we know his efforts to help him all the time is genuine. and yet...he's going to remember all of this, and he's going to use all of this one day, too.
