“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
- James Baldwin, born 100 years ago today
But now I’m not so sure I believe in beginnings and endings. There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived.
Arrival (2016) dir. Denis Villeneuve
This problem is nothing new, but this specific example with these numbers puts it into a fucking brutal perspective.
To put these numbers a different way: A Taco Bell burrito that used to cost ~7 minutes and 20 seconds of minimum wage work now costs ~30 minutes and 30 seconds of minimum wage work.
You used to be able to work at Taco Bell anywhere in the country and make enough money in one hour to buy at least 8 burritos (maybe 9 if you're a manager or something) and feed, like, 3-4 people a decently-filling meal. But now, the same amount of work at the same job will get you one meal for one person. And this change has happened over a mere 15 years.
Remember this whenever you see rich people demonize younger generations for our financial situations, when they call us irresponsible for not investing a ton of money in savings accounts.
ok looks like we're gonna be doing the same thing, different verse, now that it's Kamala Harris on the Dem ticket instead of Joe Biden.
friendly reminder that one of these 2 people is getting elected. there's not a magical 3rd party person who's mystical and perfectly progressive who is gonna come out of the woodwork and save us. not voting or voting 3rd party isn't a "protest," it's capitulation. so let's do a comparison:
On Gaza:
I forgot to add to this that Trump also stated he will deport any non-citizen who protests the war in Gaza.
On LGBTQ+ rights:
On criminal justice:
On reproductive rights:
On the border:
In case you don't believe me re: the last Trump point.
On voting rights:
On climate change:
On the working class:
Every weekday morning when I have to leave from my boyfriend’s house, his kids (3 and 5) get indignant that their TST will not be back until the evening and demand to know why I have to go to work.
In response, I always shrug and say “That’s capitalism, baby!”
You can imagine my delight this morning when I went to grab my things and both kids groaned, unprompted “Capitalism??!?! AGAIN?!?!???”
the american voting system is NOT EQUIPPED to support a 3rd party without ranked choice voting. and until we get RCV, it's one or the other. and it WILL be one or the other.
a lot of 3rd party candidates sound great, but they do not have a realistic chance at winning. be realistic. you know who does have a chance at winning? the household names, trump or harris.
splitting the vote by going 3rd party is what made trump happen in 2016, it was hillary clinton's downfall. it was USED by state sponsored internet trolls to spread propaganda, destabilize and divide the left. it was endorsed by trump himself, he tried it in 2020 too, and he's doing it again now because he knows it might be the only chance he has at winning.
be VERY wary of anyone telling you vote 3rd party. it's trump or harris. it won't be stein, de la cruz, or sherman, or fucking anybody else ive never heard of, because nobody is talking about independent candidates, and EVERYONE is talking about trump and harris.
it will be trump or harris for president, and it will be trump if you vote 3rd party. and ill tell you as an anarchist, i would rather have kamala harris and all her flaws in office over the fascist donald trump who would see me and my queer siblings and my friends and family of color dead.
do not split the fucking vote.
Listen to we old crusties. Voting 3rd party is also how we got George W. Bush in 2000.
3rd party votes should start at the local level. They will caucus with one of the bigger parties at the national level (Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are examples). The presidency is not the place to do this. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: vote for the candidate you can lobby. Who is more likely to sign RCV into law? Which candidates are likeliest to amend the constitution to create term limits for Supreme Court Justices? Who will create legislation to limit the president’s powers? VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE YOU CAN LOBBY
I love the new approach of Democrats calling conservatives "weird." THEY ARE WEIRD. And not the endearing kind of weird. Conservatives are just flat-out not charming, cool, or funny, and JD Vance is just the latest example. They gave Amber Rose a prime time speaking spot because that's the closest they could get to the A List, for fuck's sake (wonder if anyone told her that as an OnlyFans star, her career is directly threatened by Project 2025? no, not really, lol, fuck her), that's how pathetic they are. You had post-middled aged Kid Rock rock-rapping (in 2024!) about Trump. Now JD Vance is becoming a meme and making weird jokes about Diet Mountain Dew that are funny to no one, he's weird. Weird, uncool, unfunny. Like most conservatives.
I tell women this whenever I get a chance because it can be a useful tool: Men detest being called creepy. I have had entire groups of men change their tune mid-argument when I say something like “I don’t know; I just think it’s kinda creepy.” I have used it to get men to stop defending rapists, or their buddy who just dumped “a crazy bitch,” or their coworker who got a complaint against him for sexual harassment. You deploy “creepy” and suddenly they rethink their behavior. They hate that label so very, very much. Use it and watch the backpedaling in real time.
art history nerd here! when the notre dame burned a few years ago, the most damaged area was the roof. y'know who has a very extensive 3D model of the roof? ubisoft, for assassin's creed! ubisoft has been very involved in the restoration of the notre dame, pledging over half a million euros in support. so yep, that is most likely an assassin's creed dude carrying the olympic torch!

Because you can never have too much wisdom.
America has a weird relationship with cults where they’re terrified of small cults (or organizations they think are cults) but completely normalized massive cults that hurt many more people (eg: LDS Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Amish, Scientology, most Megachurches)
To anybody asking if the Amish are a cult, the answer is yes, very much so.
They’re a high control group that isolate you from society. The cult decides how you dress, how you behave, who you marry and how. They control what you know, blocking all information from the outside world. They control how you feel and what you’re allowed to think with threats of both social and supernatural harm. They’re a cult.
The best method to determine if a group is a cult, in my opinion, is Steven Hassan’s (cult expert and former cult member himself) BITE model.
BITE stands for Behavior Control, Information Control, Thought Control, and Emotional Control.
The more points a group “scores” on the model, the more of a cult it is.
I think this model is the best one for several reasons:
It’s more nuanced than “cult” or “not cult” and doesn’t make false equivalences between groups
It’s versatile, applying to groups big and small, and cults of all kinds, religious, political, financial, etc.
It focuses on what’s important, which is what the cult does to its members, and those members’ experiences, and not on irrelevant details like how uncommon their doctrines are or whether they have a charismatic leader
This is a great example of Thought Control used by cults whenever they’re confronted with criticism.
#you might notice that there are a lot of similarities between cult techniques and those of abusive partners#and that is an important thing to be aware of
yah that goes in the post
The creator of the BITE Model considers abusive relationships to be two-person cults.
It’s important to note that almost every sect of evangelical christianity in the US today fails the BITE Model.
This was the post that lead to breaking my JW mindset. Been a while since I seen it.
I’m glad I could help in your deconstruction, if only a little bit. I wish you all the luck in your journey moving forward.
I think Odysseus is the guy everyone else makes talk to the cops when they show up to bust the party.
I think he could do a really good “Hello officer, how are you?” if he had to.
YEAH EXACTLY
Athena is standing behind him whispering the bylaws into his ear.
hold on i need to look this up
