[I froze, not understanding what I was seeing for a moment.]
[The figure in front of me was definitely not him.]
???: I couldn't sleep.
[I pulled my aching legs towards myself.]
[Those earsโฆand a tail. Am I dreaming?]
???: I'm not gonna hurt you.
???: I just wanted toโฆtake a look at you.
[I couldn't seem to find my voice]
[I could only stare at him.]
[After I got over the inital shock, I realized that he was staring at me too.]
[I thought I was used to wearing nothing but my underwear butโฆ]
[I shifted my legs to try and hide my body a little.]
Alex: Alrightโฆuhโฆ
???: Oh! Uh Sorry I guessโฆ
Alex: Soโฆwho're you?
Ren: Ren.
Alex: Ren. Ok uh I'm-
Ren: Alex, I know. He talks about you a lot.
["He." Strade appeared in my mind like a lightning strike. I knew then, without a doubt, I was awake. A thousand questions exploded in my head. One rose to the top and fell out of my mouth before I could organize them.]
Alex: Will you help me?
Ren: โฆI can't.
Ren: Look, it's not that I don't want to okay? I want you to last a long time! As long as you're alive, he'll leave me-
Ren: โฆ
Ren: But I'm not supposed to be down hereโฆHe doesn't know I'm down here.
Alex: Are you likeโฆme then?
[He sighed.]
Ren: Yeah I guess you could say that.
Ren: Do you see the collar?
Ren: It's a shock collar.
Ren: And he always has the remote for it. If I do anything wrong, or if I step outside the houseโฆ
Ren: It'll electrocute me.
[I took a moment to process the onslaught of new information.]
Alex: So uhโฆyou can't do anything?
Ren: Now you're getting it.
Alex: How did you end up here?
Ren: I uhโฆ
Ren: Probably a lot like you.
Ren: I was at a bar andโฆhe took me home.
Ren: He tied me to that pole andโฆ
Ren: Uh-
Alex: It's okay. You don't need to say.
Alex: I know what he does.
Ren: HehโฆRight.
Ren: Well, I guess he liked me. Maybe it's my stupid ears or whatever. But one day he said, he didn't want to kill me anymore.
Ren: And then he put this collar on meโฆ
Ren: Andโฆhere I am.
Alex: Iโฆsee.
[I tried to calm the storm in my head. I don't think he's dangerous but I don't think he can save me either.]
Ren: LookโฆI can't help you-
Ren: Much.
Ren: Butโฆ
[He suddenly crouched down to the floor.]
[He lifted up the grate on the drain in the middle of the floor]
Ren: Sometimes he takes me back down here.
Ren: Andโฆleaves me.
Ren: So I hid these.
[and then withdrew a tiny pill bottle.]
Ren: Pain killers.
[He approached me with a pill on his finger, then he lifted it to my mouth.]
[I couldn't help but notice the large curved claw on his fingertip.]
[What if he's lying? I shook my head internally. None of that matters.]
[I leaned foward, and he pushed the pill between my lips.]
[His touch lingered for a split second longer than I expected.]
[Or had I imagined that?]
[It was difficult to swallow with my dry mouth, but I eventually managed.]
[He put the bottle and the grate back.]
Ren: If you're alone you can get with your feet.
Ren: It's not easy butโฆit's not like you'll have anything else to do.
Ren: And one last thing.
Ren: The night footage gets deleted automatically after a couple of days.
Ren: He won't find out if you don't give him a reason.
Ren: So DON'T give him a reason to check.
Ren: Anywayโฆ
Ren: I have to go.
Ren: I've pushed this to far already.
Alex: Thank you Ren.
Ren: โฆ
Ren: Stay alive, Alex.
Ren: As long as you can.
Ren: I really have to go now.
[He turned and left, moving deftly up to the stairs.]
