With a world full of racial tension what is there to do?
One must stand up and speak out for change to occur
In order to truly make a difference we must work hard
Fight for equality for race, gender, and lgbtq+ rights
We must learn from past events such as Selma and Ferguson
Use this knowledge to overcome stereotypes
Social media can be a powerful tool to make your voice be heard
#HandsUpDontShoot and #BlackLivesMatter are hope for tomorrow
Stop these oppositions: black vs. white, rich vs. poor, and male vs. female
Aren’t we all just chasing the same American dream?
American expectations of whites are so low that they are never assumed capable of identifying with anyone but themselves. If you’re going to finally make a movie that doesn’t cast Muslims as terrorists—the film about the famous scholar and poet Rumi, for example—then naturally, you have to cast a white actor to play Rumi. You can’t expect whites to support something if they aren’t the center of it. - “Low Standard for Whites. That’s What’s Killing Us,” Mitchell
This holds a lot of truth that whites feel the need to view themselves as the center of focus and hero type in media ranging from making white criminals sound better in news stories than black criminals to having whites being the hero in films and TV shows while having Muslims and other races cast as the “bad guys”. This stereotype casting needs to stop because it is making the race and discrimination problem in our country even worse.
“Here’s the thing the mayor doesn’t understand: As a general rule, no one should ever be allowed to say that there is no history of racial tension here, because that sentence has never been true anywhere on Earth.”
- John Oliver
John Oliver has a point when saying that there has always been a period of racial tension occurring somewhere on Earth. Especially in America, racial tension has been a huge part of US history and has affected countless amounts of people. This being said, the mayor was wrong and out of his place for saying that there has not been any racial tension in his town because that statement will be false everywhere.

This video shines light on the unnecessary use of power and force that local police departments posses. If cops are being supplied with army gear and vehicles, then it gives them an even more excuse to be more forceful. Police can do their job with normal police cruisers and weapons and don’t need this excess gear. The only thing this accomplishes is creating more fear for the people in the community because, just as shown in this video, they believe that their town is extremely crime ridden.
“On #Ferguson, you could watch six simultaneous live streams. You could read what protestors were tweeting, what journalists were reporting, what the police was announcing, and how observers and analysts interpreted the unfolding events.”
Thanks to social media and technology, these days people don’t have to just rely on TV news channels to report what’s happening around the world they can see it from different people’s perspectives and get all sides of the story.
Whiteness determines who has wealth in this country, who can expect to get justice, who constantly gets the benefit of the doubt. Whiteness and the racism it facilitates are not personal. That’s why a white man or woman doesn’t have to do anything particularly well to end up with above average success
“Low Standards for Whites. That’s What’s Killing Us”, Koritha Mitchell
It is important to understand #BlackLivesMatter not simply as a general statement about the inherent value of black life in the face of state-sanctioned racial violence but also as a reflection of the ways that social media can become a site for the revaluation of black materiality.

If you are white in Ferguson you would have to be snorting cocaine off your dashboard to get stopped by the police

Intimacy is important in my work because I don’t understand existence without intimacy. All of us are dependent on other people—and in ways we don’t know. You cross the street and assume that person isn’t crazy, they don’t want to mow me down with their car. I don’t know that person but I am already in a relationship with them.

Do you feel hurt because it's "all black people look the same" moment, or because you are being confused with another after being so close to this other?

Dear White People
President Fletcher: Racism is over in America. The only people who are thinking about it are, I dunno, Mexicans probably.
I thought this quote in the conversation between the Dean and the President of the university stood out because he is acknowledging the fact that racism exists, but he disregards that it is affecting African Americans. By doing this he is ignoring the race problem occurring in his school and not attempting to listen to the students.
“Black people can't be racist. Prejudice, yes, but not racist. Racism describes a system of disadvantage based on race. Black people can't be racist since we don't stand to benefit from such a system” - Dear White People (2014)
“That means protest! That means march! That means disturb the peace! That means jail! That means risk! That is hard!”
- MLK while talking to the congregation from the Movie Selma
The march in Selma was a powerful movement and took a lot of passion and dedication from MLK Jr to risk his life for something he believed in. Even though attempts of this march ended up costing them more than they gained, MLK still was persistent and tried again until his goal was achieved.
