In July, the angels are let out of their cages, only they aren’t angels. They are the prophets of new, teenagers with broken hearts and cheshire cat smiles. In the eyes of the universe, they are incredibly young— achingly mortal. Instead of robes, they wear cutoff shorts and boat shoes, khakis and Birkenstocks. They congregate in Eastern Ontario, and learn that even sinful hearts have a silver lining. And that is why they are holy— not because of their lack of sin, but despite the abundance of it. Here is something that I know for sure: God loves us best when we love each other. We spend all summer doing just that. * Genesis starts in a clearing in the woods. It is easy to believe here: the trees breathe His glory, and with the sunlight shining the right way I can almost see the path to heaven. We find God in the deep forest, and the ground shakes. When the rain comes, I take cover in people rather than Him. We learn the bible stories and sing our songs, worshipping the Lord before going out and wreaking our havoc. * In church, we sit with our legs crossed. We swing our floodgate hearts wide open, hoping for a spark of the divine. We laugh, and it feels more truthful than the Gospel. When the sun comes, we raise our hands in praise. Here is something that I know for sure: if Jesus was to walk the earth once more, He would walk with us.

Meet The Radical Brownies!!!

Not your average girl scout group…

In the Radical Brownies, girls ages 8-12 learn about social justice movements such the Black Panthers and the Chicano group Brown Berets. They wear their brown berets in homage to those two groups. But they also study how Disney princesses define girls’ image of beauty, and how that can affect self-image.

The Radical Brownies have their own badge system, including one for “Radical Beauty” and an “LGBT ally” badge. The girls also earned a “Black Lives Matter” badge after learning about police accountability and attending a civil rights march in Oakland.

Anayvette Martinez, a community organizer, created the Radical Brownies with Marilyn Hollinquest because “there aren’t enough spaces [for young girls of color] in our society.” The Radical Brownies of Oakland launched last month and already includes 12 girls. All the members are girls of color or mixed-race. The Radical Brownies are not affiliated with the Girl Scouts of the USA.

The founders say once the program expands to multiple chapters the organization will be open to everybody, but the program will always remain focused on young girls of color.

“I think it’s never too early to have these conversations with young people,” Martinez told Fusion.

“Children are more aware than we think; it’s important to not shelter children from real issues that we’re living,” she said. “It’s especially important for young girls of color to feel empowered.”

Here are a couple of the less well-known pieces of astrophotography.

These two images were originally sent back to Earth from the Soviet Venera program probes (I believe these specific two came from Venera 13, though I don’t have the citation to hand).

That’s right - that barren rocky wasteland is Venus.

These images are particularly notable because Venus has a surface temperature of over 460 Celsius and a pressure of around 90 bars. That atmosphere is also pure poison. The clouds you can see aren’t water vapour; they’re composed of droplets of sulphuric acid. The ‘air’ itself is 94% carbon dioxide, with most of the rest being nitrogen and a lot of weird nasties.

None of the Venera landers remained operational for more than a couple of hours once on Venus’s surface. But frankly, given how unbelievably hostile the surface conditions are there, it’s a miracle they were able to function at all.
