when i think abt hawkfrost/reedwhisker i always think of their dynamic as like. they had crushes on each other as apprentices and had a big will they/wont they thing as warriors that came very very close to them becoming official mates, up until hawkfrost started to try and undermine mistyfoot and made it clear that he wanted her spot as deputy and helped stormfur get kicked out of riverclan. reedwhisker refused to tolerate or turn a blind eye to that obviously and it lead to them falling out, and even though hawkfrost always sort of hoped that maybe one day reedwhisker would get it, but as time goes on hawkfrost views it as weakness on reedwhiskers part and is like "well, it's his loss. maybe one day he'll come around, i can't spend the rest of my life waiting for him" and even though reedwhisker had no regrets about distancing himself, he started to notice hawkfrost pulling away from everyone, started to wonder if maybe he should try and reach out to him, but then hawkfrost dies and he's like. well. i dont regret breaking up with him, but that can't be it, right? i'll never get to talk to him again, never get to figure out what all that was about? oh. hm. okay.
Aaaaaah it’s done! This was a bit of a mammoth to complete honestly, but I’m pretty stoked with it. The transitionary third panel is a bit shit and there’s some cropping issues but I’m burning out and I need to get this out of my system so I can move on from it lmao.
A redraw of the same comic from nearly two years ago now! Essentially the same concept but executed a little closer to my original idea if that makes sense. Still pretty happy with the old version, but I’m glad it can co-exist with this one :)
In case it’s unclear, the fourth and fifth panels depict the battle of Starclan vs the Dark Forest, Goldenflower reliving her memories of Tigerstar before she takes him down in battle!

I really struggle to design clothes (these will /not/ be accurate to any particular period, or make sense practically I'm sure) and I'm also not too sure about weapon choices yet, but this was more about their dynamic as a group so I'm at peace with it lol.
I wrote some fun facts if you want themm, but some might be a little lost in the sauce of the au (lack context, rip)
Crowpaw brings his late father's greyhound Hoprunner with him, who Brambleshoot ends up forming a bond with. It's Brambleshoot who leaves the group early (after Midnight, pre-Feathertail's death) to ride Hoprunner back to the kingdoms, to warn of the incoming storm/flood
((in this au the kingdoms are flooded, which forms the lake within the existing forest territories))
Crow and Squirrel are both unknighted and therefore "unnamed", Crow being a young squire and Squirrel having failed her final test (a trial set by Starclan)
Despite Feathertail's best efforts, the others are initially cautious of the young princess's intentions and its Squirrel's brash honesty and humour that initially brings everyone together as friends.
Stormpath admires these traits as being so unlike the insincerity of the River Kingdom's court and he develops a strong, unreturned crush on her (she's aroace, but doesn't get a chance to realise this until late in life)
Brambleshoot wasn't chosen by Starclan, Squirrel was; his insecurity about this, plus his early departure, holds him back from fully connecting with the others
Tawnypelt fights the hardest against bonding on an emotional level, too aware of their eventual separation and determined to keep things professional. She becomes the unofficial leader, working well with Feathertail who handles the more "personable" aspects of a leadership role.
They form mutual romantic feelings before Feathertail dies as a result of a jointly made plan. This devastates Tawny and she’s the first to pull away from the others upon returning to the kingdoms.
Stormpath is the only of the six Tawnypelt keeps in regular contact with.
