I love the general air of gleeful mischief pervading We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Among other things it's basically a fantasy indulging everyone's inner twelve-year-old. You are a special important member of the elite living in a special huge house. The common people hate you but you are better than them. You can kill all the adults who were ever mean to you or punished you, and also you can kill your annoying little brother who they favoured over you. You have immense power and can chase off anyone who tries to hurt or control you. You live with a devoted caregiver that you always have the attention of and everyone is afraid of you and you will never have to grow up and integrate into the adult world. Everyone who tries to change this is evil and gets defeated. Time will never pass and things will stay the same forever.
