"It's much more fun," said Scarf Mouse. "Would you like to play?"
The Rat was about to say that she had actually only stopped for directions to somewhere with less clouds and more beaches, but Scarf Mouse had such a hopeful look on her face that the Rat found herself agreeing to play a round of Crochet with them. After all, she wasn't in a hurry.
The Rat had a little trouble with the string at first, but turned out to be a natural. She won by eleven rows.
Trouser Fox was a little annoyed to have lost against somebody who was smaller than him, but Scarf Mouse liked to make new friends, so she asked the Rat what her name was.
"I'm Rat," said the Rat.
"That's a very little name," said Trouser Fox, suspiciously.
"Maybe it's short for something," suggested Scarf Mouse. "Like ... like Sock Rat, or Skirt Rat."
"No," the Rat said, "just Rat."

the joke was that Rat was from OUT OF TOWN and no one in the forest understood why she was not called like, Hat Rat, or Slipper Rat, because everyone else was called things like Trousers Fox and Sweater Raccoon
(Sweater Raccoon was from America, which is why he was called Sweater Raccoon) (Raccoons don't live in the UK, geez.)
