Maybe medieval people happened upon a T-Rex fossil and came to a relatively logical conclusion that dragons existed.

I’ve read a couple books on this actually, thats exactly what happened. Also cyclops are from looking at bones from a certain type of baby elephant. The giant note hole and tiny eyes made it look like a single eye.

Yep, can confirm! And what’s even funnier to me is that back in the dark ages, Greek people used to find a lot of prehistoric bear skeletons - and those look exactly like human skeletons, except they’re like eight feet tall or something - so they naturally assumed those were the heroes of legend, and made armour and clothes for them and reburied them with the most splendid and sacred religious ceremonies they could think of? Fast forward five centuries, Athens’ all modern and rational, philosophers and scientists aren’t taking any shit from anyone - but the problem is, people will randomly find graves containing giant-ass warriors, so that’s something that can’t be explained away and yeah, demigods were a thing and yeah, they used to be eight feet tall and sorry I don’t make the rules.

Some scientists suspect that the origin of the cyclops myths came about because of elephant skulls, which are vaguely human in shape but with a honking big hole in the middle for the trunk but easily mistakable for an eye socket without any flesh

Sometimes Google Doodles come at you fast o_o

This morning I woke up to news of the incredible Black Hole Photo by the The Event Horizon Telescope. I was blown away and it seemed like a crazy enough idea for us to make Doodle for, so while brushing my teeth I wrote and email to my boss and proposed it.

By the time I was dressed the idea was approved and up to me to create ASAP.  In the car on the way to work I sketched out some (very professional) concept sketches.  

Once I got to the office it was approved and I as told to get to animating!

2.5 hours later the doodle was finished and live on the homepage.  I’ve done some current event doodles before but nothing this fast! So excited it actually got to see the light of day (only to be sucked away), they even let me keep the little E holding on for dear life! Hopefully folks got to see this today and if they didn’t already know about the photo they got to go find out more about the incredible discovery and the people behind it. 

Space blows my mind and if I can use my art to try and make it just a little more accessible for people, it’s worth all the crazy breakneck effort that goes into making it happen :D

A little thing I tried today. Some sort of stylized »Droseraceae«, also known as sundew traps.

Watched the whole series on the first day of release, but only now I tried to replicate the awesome logo-style with a hint of personal taste. Was quite fun to get the feeling right.

There’s a nice insight of how it was made at Vox.

Can’t wait for season two!
