I also think that while Dexter craves control he also deeply wants to give up control. This is most obvious in his relationship with Harry. He lets Harry control pretty much every aspect of his life. It all comes back to anxiety and feeling unsafe.

Letting Harry have that control over him gives him a sense of safety. He feels like he can control the chaos if he just does everything Harry tells him to. When he losses Harry he clings to the code. If he continues to do everything as Harry taught him he’ll be safe. That’s why it’s so difficult for him to ever truly come to terms with the fact that Harry abused him. If he doesn’t have Harry he’s truly on his own. That’s the most terrifying thing.

He wants control and he wants to be controlled because deep down he’s still that 3-year-old boy sitting in his mother’s blood.
