Have u seen that Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the French open after she didn’t want to do press conference in order to protect her mental health, she was fined yesterday and was threatened to be defaulted from future tournament if she didn’t attend her press conference in the future.

What do U think of this norm of players being forced to face media before and after a game even after citing not wanting to protect their mental health.

Yes I have seen it and Naomi has my full support. This is a topic that we touched on previously during the height of BLM, and last summer regarding the questions being asked of Black players.

The media has a right to hold press conferences with athletes. It is in athlete’s contracts to attend these, however I believe that the players should have advocacy and ability to step down from a press conference for their health. If Naomi were injured in a freak accident on the court, she wouldn’t be expected to do a press conference with a broken ankle or whatever you know? But if her emotions are hurting, if she has used all of her spoons, then she physically can not be present for an interview that eats at her energy if that makes sense.

And all of these interviews can be done later hours after the match. They can request email comment, voice memos, phone calls at a time specified by Naomi and her agent. The most blatant part of all of this is how ableist it all is, and how it’s been ingrained in players especially players of color that if they don’t comment to the media they are “ungrateful, lazy, entitled, bratty, selfish” when in reality they’re fucking tired. Naomi is being asked questions that aren’t just about playing tennis but BLM; AAPI, activism, Olympics, Serena always- come on.

And to bring it back down to woso I haven’t heard more than a few peeps of a certain Chicago captain not talking to media since 2019 when in contrast a certain Royals player missed a media meeting because she was sick and was labeled as a selfish brat. There’s some differences there you should all sit with.

It’s time that journalists learn boundaries of athletes and how they’re not just someone you can hound and collect info from like a dictionary.

Im not surprised by this behavior from the officals of the France open. This is the same open that was horrible rasict and misogynist in there harrassment and discrimination against Serena Williams. The fined and banned her MEDICALLY PRESCRIBED compression suit for when she was having issues with blood clots after her pregnancy.

It is all lip service when these agencies AND Media/press outlets put iut all theses "Mental Health is important! Make sure to work on your Mental Heath!! Take care of your mind and body!" Messages but proceed to treat these athletes so horribly in interviews and not allowing them to properly rest and reset. Naomi even tried asking for press interviews to be rescheduled for when she was properly rested and reset and they refused.
