get good or get gay
this morning NASA abandoned their mars rover Opportunity (aka Oppy) because it (she) got hit by a storm on Mars and it knocked her camera and wheels out and her last words to the team were “my battery is low and it is getting cold”. I know she’s a machine but I’m devastated. Oppy is the one who discovered water on Mars. RIP oppy ily space baby
they didn’t abandon her!! they tried eight months to reach her!!!! as their last farewell to her yesterday they played her “I’ll be seeing you” by Billie Holiday:
“I’ll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I’ll be looking at the moon
But I’ll be seeing you”
They love her so much and they tried so hard!!!
Oh man, It doesn’t end there.
This isn’t the first song NASA sent Opportunity. They had a playlist:
https://www.space.com/41434-mars-rover-opportunity-wakeup-music-playlist.html?fbclid=IwAR3uL6q4tOmLQTIEhiwYegGc99nv4N01HQKItpCLQiQYIptBOevNN6uIyT8
It’s on Spotify, it’s called “Opportunity, wake up!“
This is what’s great about NASA and it’s what’s great about people. These are world-class engineers. When they sent a rover to another planet they could have easily looked at it as just another scientific tool. But people don’t do that. We can and will get emotionally attached to the most inanimate of objects. We can and will anthropomorphize anything. And frankly Opportunity’s camera mast looks like a little face with eyes and everything, so why not?
So they started calling it her.
They nicknamed her Oppy.
They told her to take a selfie not long ago.
After 15 years of Oppy flipping the double bird to her original 90 day life expectancy, when a planet-spanning dust storm finally knocked her out and she stopped responding to the engineer’s wake-up messages, they started playing music for her.
And after 8 months and almost 1000 unanswered wake-up messages, when it was finally clear that Oppy was never going to wake up, the last thing these world-class NASA engineers did for their little rover on another planet
Was play her a love song

i just found out there was a banned episode of pingu and it really did deserve to be banned because it filled me with such an unnatural fear that i dissociated while watching it
: ( why was it banned?
oh no particular reason
Awesome photo from the official Star Wars Twitter account.
#I’m still so amused that han’s idea of formal wear is “exactly the same shit but buttoned up above the clavicle” #that’s his idea of getting dressed up #luke is wearing his nice formal black and leia is statuesque with half a ton of braids on her head #but han just….did up two or three buttons… #mY LOSER SPACE SON
@claudiajeancregg-concannon
# can we also talk about the fact that Luke is wearing Han’s clothes. #which makes sense since his home was burned he didn’t bring a change of clothes # so this means Han put off wearing new threads to this thing and let Luke wear his only other good clothes #but what about you, Han #eh, it’s fine kid, I’ll just button up the collar.
For any of you who are writing ‘across the pond’-here is a little guide I put together of some common differences between British and American English!
Interesting… In Australia we’re about 70% English, 20% American and 10% pure Aussie. (I own a pair of gumboots for example.)
One that’s not on here … I was baffled utterly by “slip road” when I was driving in the UK until finally figuring out that’s what a freeway on-ramp is called there.
A “singlet” is UK for a sleeveless undershirt. Only just found that one out!
(a few of these are off though, all Americans I know say makeup unless they’re into marketing or something? And “economy class” has become the default… I’d have thought “coach” was UK tbh?)
under the grill / on the grill is a bit of a misnomer though. I mean when the US says “on the grill” they mean this:
when the UK / AU says “under the grill(er)” they mean this:
(I think you call it a broiler in the US?)
UK doesn’t use ‘singlet’ for sleeveless undershirt, that’s Aus (?). UK is ‘vest’. Though we don’t just wear it as an undershirt: any sleeveless top = vest.
Coach in the UK means a bus, never a kind of air travel.
are those two dudes from supernatural ok? it’s been like 14 years. there’s high schoolers younger than their contract. i don’t think i’ve ever seen them in any other shows. are they allowed to leave? do they feed them?

I read this weeks ago and I can’t stop thinking about it
To all the young Millenials about to watch M*A*S*H for the first time, do not be turned off by Max Klinger being a guy in a dress.
For those of you unaware, the character tries several schemes to get out of the army on the grounds of being mentally unfit for service, most notably being a man who wears a dress, which no one buys. It’s played off as a joke but everyone loves him and treats him very respectfully unless it’s a character you’re not supposed to sympathise with.
You might want to call bull on the fact that they’re getting a cheap joke at a man in a dress. But, this man in a dress had a gender identity crisis ON SCREEN (although they couldn’t call it that) and also helped pave the way to allow transgender people into the armed forces.
No, seriously. A congressman who was a fan of the show brought up how Max Klinger cross dressing never was an issue at this M*A*S*H unit and it allowed transgender people to serve in the armed forces!
I’m a trans(masc) millenial and the biggest thing I feel was made fun of was how much some people were bothered by Klinger’s clothes, not the fact that he’s wearing them.
Klinger learns a lot about fashion and sewing and seems to develop a genuine passion for it over time.
There’s even one time when he develops a psychosomantic (spelling?) rash during a short time when he has to wear his uniform. Even after it is clear that he’s not gonna get to go home by wearing dresses, he continues - suggesting either a persistent act of defiance to make him feel better, or a real appreciation of the clothes… or both!
He’s clearly coded as straight, is accepted by his peers, and his character arc and development is barely focused on his clothes (rather it focuses on what he wants to do with his life; his dream future).
For a show made in the 70’s depicting the 50’s, M*A*S*H was a show before its time - with feminist messages and anti-war messages, as well as speking out against homophobia and racism - and Klinger was a groundbreaking character.
This is especially true, I think, if you watch the episodes sans the laugh track. Without the canned laughter, Klinger’s costuming comes off as especially sincere. Klinger is a good man and a great character and everyone in the camp respects him (and if they don’t, it’s not because of his attire).
The discovery that you can select “English Without Laugh Track” as an audio track has made the DVDs wonderful.
YOU CAN TURN OFF THE LAFF TRACK?? YES PLEASE!!
Klinger is the best!
When I was a little girl I legit loved Klinger and his gorgeous dresses and skirts, and nothing about him seemed strange or abnormal to me; I understood that he’d wanted a section 8 initially but it also seemed really clear to me that in that process he’d found himself, in whatever sense was important to him, and everyone accepted him in the unit. To me growing up in a completely queerphobic household/culture, he was a figure of great love and joy and positivity, and I embraced him unquestioningly and gratefully.
Bonus: Klinger also comes from a family of immigrants.
Like the cross-dressing, the jokes about it are sometimes a little borderline for today’s audiences. But Klinger’s cultural identity was mentioned constantly, and consistently shown as something that he was very proud of.
There was even an episode where all the M*A*S*H peoples’ families were planning a get-together in the states, and everyone worked especially hard to make sure that Klinger’s parents - who didn’t speak any English - were welcomed and included.
(Including this picture again for the caption over at Imgur - ‘M*A*S*H is owned by Fox. Fox is now owned by Disney. Klinger is now a Disney princess.’)
KLINGER IS A DISNEY PRINCESS
oh dear
Yes, we have seen the news! We are planning to have the site back up either tomorrow or Wednesday; we just have a couple last security measures we want to put in place today, but we will be working on it as quickly as possible and we will have a clearer ETA by tonight.
We will also try to come up with a way to lower the barrier to entry for new users, though we don’t want to drop the entry fee entirely because a) we feel that would be unfair to our users who have paid for their registration keys and b) we don’t think our servers could handle a massive influx of new users right now, so we’re going to try to allow as many new users as we can without capsizing the boat. We appreciate your patience and will have more details soon!

straight people shut up challenge
Frank stop. Go read a book or yell at a cloud it would be just as useful as this statement you left on Twitter.
He did add this later, which is… something?
[x] good ending
here’s a great example of what happens if you let people learn instead of telling them to shut up
here’s also a great example of what happens when people listen and educate themselves and show empathy and a willingness to change
i had the worst office conversation about this, like, seriously, my office is generally a good supportive environment but they fully didn’t get that this shit actually mattered to me, its just muppets lol, this made me feel better about it
today in “things i’m disproportionately emotional about”:
it’s facial reconstructions of prehistoric humans!!
like, look at this part-homo sapiens, part-neandertal man from well over 30,000 years ago:
doesn’t he just look like a dude you’d wanna hang out with? like he probably washes dishes in the kitchen with you, and has excellent weed
what a charming fellow. what stories he probably has to tell. i’d definitely go shoot the shit with him on Contemplation Rock after i’d finished my day’s work carving a bone flute for the autumn hunting ceremony, or whatever
people have been people ever since people first became people, i tell you what
they all had lives and histories and families and friends and dumb gossip and games they played and total bullshit in which they believed wholeheartedly
they all argued about the nature of the world, and of themselves
they all sang songs
they all drew pictures
they all buried their dead in graves, and they buried their dead in graves well before they did a lot of that other stuff. they buried their dead with flowers, with panther claws, with the bones of animals they’d killed, with the bones of family members who had died at the same time or earlier. they buried their dead with their arms folded across their chests
they fell in love
they took care of their old and their sick and their disabled, even when it cost them
they made new things, and worried about what the new things meant for people everywhere, as a whole
Oh I like him he looks like he would appreciate my jokes
This dude would have great stories at a get-together and would bring some really great homemade dip.
I feel like he really digs Lo-Fi Music
This guy was sculpted by Alfons and Adrie Kennis, and their Neanderthal reconstructions are all delightful.
I love the kid in the last picture a lot- they look like a kid, just a little kid who’s done some mischief and is trying not to laugh about it.
I also adore their Lucy- they’ve struck a wonderful balance between the falling angel and the rising ape.
And their Turkana boy- there’s something precious and wistful in those eyes.
But my favorite has got to be their reconstruction of H. floresiensis.
Just look at her. That’s a face of someone who’s lived and seen a lot, but also a face that’s known love and joy and laughter. That’s a face with a soul.
#paleoart#kennis and kennis do a GREAT job#so does um what’s her name she’s in france her first name is elizabeth she did magdalenian woman#what is her name#well her reconstructions are also VERY GOOD
!!!!!!!
… Was this just Kate McKinnon doing an improv riff on her feelings about Gillian Anderson?
