political and ecological concerns standing, i dont care much about the AI putting "artists" out of business argument.... everyone shaking in their boots are digital artists producing ultra marketable lowest common denominator Product, if not people only aspiring to that. the schlock craftsmen going out of business is concerning from a labor standpoint but i think the artistic spirit of humanity will be fine. the net amount of thoughtful contextualized insightful and timely beauty in the world will stay the same ive seen no evidence AI can produce that. and the cultural boycott of AI imagery i think is sort of absurd, i just discourage relying on generative AI directly for any form of expression or intellectual work due to the gooner-like conciousness negating character of that vice + its environmental impacts

for example pinterest showed me this image of tupac, laurence fishburne, and sylvester stallone drinking rakı in türkiye. it is obviously hilarious and occupies the same affectionate niche in my heart as a poorly rendered goku on the side of a taqueria, it contains only the cultural merit that the echoes of its references can carry, and doesnt pretend to be anything more than that, except maybe the genius of its dissonant placement. if someone had painted this by hand it would have been even funnier due to the absurdity in great effort being used for such a sureal and goofy purpose, but the use of AI here is only a miscarriage of craftsmanship, not art... and honestly this picture has more value to me than a digital painting with 100+ hours of labor used for like, world of warcraft expansion launch art

AI is trained off of available data. Available data is about the real world, where racism and sexism and all that shit exists. Unless you carefully put effort into making sure that bigotry is EXCLUDED from the training, it will by default be included.

We've known this forever. There is no excuse. They don't bother, or they do a shitty job at it, because they want to make more money and carefully curating your own custom dataset without racism in it is not only extremely difficult, but very expensive.
