Whenever I think about Regina and try to make sense of her characterization, it always comes down to this one gif. 

For the magic hat to work all you need to do is throw it on the ground. It starts spinning by itself. Of course here the hat doesn’t work, so what does Regina do? She tries to make it spin. She tries to force it.

That’s pretty much what her entire life has been like: She’s been offered empty promises of happiness, she’s been manipulated, abused, and blamed. And then she always tried to somehow make it work, force it to work. She never cared that her attempts seemed illogical objectively (and her plans rarely worked out to be frank).

It’s like…some people try to fend off Wraiths with brooms.
