How was this already 3 weeks ago?! We had an appointment with my midwives yesterday and they decided to weigh J because they couldn’t get over his rolls…. anyone want to guess how much my little boob addict weighs?! I’ll give you a hint: it’s more than 12lbs 1oz… but less than 12lbs 3ozs… At 3 weeks 3 days old… The evidence of his constant need to be at the breast and on my chest is pretty clear! I had totally forgotten so much of the newborn phase. J is definitely an easy baby, but now that its been about a year since I last breastfed H, and then was pregnant three months later with J, its been such a long time that my body hasn’t been mine. I forgot how draining it is to have someone constantly touching and needing you, and how physically exhausting the cluster feeding can be. What’s something you wish someone had told you about newborns? Three weeks of brotherhood, and the first thing H wants to do when he gets "presents" in the mail is open them with baby J. My heart melts that his latest favorite thing to do is reading to J while I nurse him and lay him down to sleep ❤️ (And also helps me forget what a tornado H is and what a disaster zone he leaves behind him haha) Jude is still a phenomenal sleeper, addicted to the boob juice, and I'm guessing is somewhere between 10.5 - 11lbs, based on the fact that we already had to pack up all the newborn clothes and he's well into 3+ month territory here. I'm still a total crazy person, but I'm trying to remind myself that we're still very new to this, and it's perfectly acceptable to wear the same maternity yoga pants multiple days in a row, and forget when the last time was I showered. This house is basically covered in breast milk, pee, and that gross yellow-ish newborn poop, but at least the SIX loads of laundry were finally folded, hung and put away... - Now that we’ve been using our Owlet for the past three weeks, I may be even more in love with it than before... I slept so terribly with H because I was so paranoid about his breathing during the night, so this time around I really wanted to be proactive and try something out to give me a little peace of mind (and hopefully a lot of zzZZ’s!) I still can’t believe that this little human has been earthside for 2 weeks! It’s like someone knew that I needed a calming force in this house, and delivered him to me. He is such a relaxed baby, and sleeps through all of H’s *very loud* temper tantrums and Clyde’s barking sprees. It’s hard to tell whether he enjoys breastfeeding or sleeping more, and I’m so thankful he’s such a good sleeper! He is up way past his birth weight, is already in size one diapers and too chunky and long for his newborn clothes, but has already started losing that yummy newborn smell 😭. We are still slowly but surely attempting to adjust to life as a family of 4, and holy guacamole - you moms of more than one kiddo are seriously my hero. How in the world do you do it?! It feels like I barely have time to shower, get dressed, think, be productive, or do much of anything these days with trying to balance two kiddos, a crazy dog, and some pretty big life changes that we have coming up. I’m basically surviving on lavender essential oils, babywearing, green smoothies, nursing bras and yoga pants - the 4th trimester is strong in this house! A bunch of you were asking about my labor and delivery with Jude, and if I had a better birth experience this time around, and I was *finally* able to sit down long enough (although, lets be honest, it took me a week and a half thanks to starting and stoping so many times!) to write it all out! Since HE is now 8 days old, I figured it was about time to come out of the woodwork and announce the arrival of our sweet rainbow baby: Jude Keith! I haven’t opened my computer in almost two weeks, my email inbox is overly full with emails I need to respond to, I don’t remember the last text message I opened, our laundry is officially flowing over the baskets and onto the floors, I don’t remember the last time I cooked, and we’ve eaten way too much pie in this last week, but HE’S HERE. Thank you so much to all of you for your support through my crazy pregnancy anxieties and emotions, and for checking in this last week while I’ve been MIA! Adjusting to life as a family of 4 has been so much different than anticipated, and we’re definitely in a transitional period, but H is so in love with snuggling and high five-ing his “baby brudder Jood” that it gives me so much hope that we can totally do this. - Any advice on juggling two at once? I’m wanting to still give H as much one on one quality time as possible, but what do I do with J for the 5 minutes a day I can get him off the boob? 40 weeks And I’m about to get really really real. I’ve literally cried on and off all day. Why? I don’t know. Because my coffee took too long in the brewer this morning. Because nothing sounded good to eat. Because my toddler had an epic hour long meltdown that included throwing each and every single one of his toys from their shelves onto the floor, lots of screaming, and hitting me when I tried to hold and rock him. Because my dad is leaving Friday morning for 2 weeks and I’m worried baby won’t be here before then. Because none of my clothes fit. Because I just want to see this baby’s face. Because I want to hold this baby to my chest. Because I just want to breathe this baby in, and know that he or she is healthy and HERE. Because. Because. Because. There are way too many emotions in this big swollen body, and if one more person tells me “baby will come when baby is ready” (yes, I know this) or asks me “do WE have a baby yet?” (We? Really? Were you there during conception?) I might just explode. I know, flame away, pregnancy is supposed to be this big, beautiful, exciting time, and I’m supposed to be sweet and loving and farting unicorn rainbows, but all I feel is the big-ness and overwhelming emotions. And you know what? IT’S OKAY that I’m feeling like this! It’s okay that I’m feeling “done”. It’s okay that I’m feeling miserable. It’s okay that I’m basically a weeping willow in human form. Because it’s my pregnancy, it’s my body, it’s my experience, and I’m entitled to feel it all. And YOU are too. Yep! Still here! Still very pregnant! The Hubs is back from his last business trip before baby Bear joins us (so, hear that baby? 39 weeks! Is it weird that even though I’ve been really vocal about wanting to make it to full term, I’m pretty surprised that I’m still pregnant at this point? We had kind of a big scare at my midwife appointment today - it was looking like Bear had decided to turn around and hang out in an head up (Breech) position, and baby’s heartbeat is in the 100s instead of the high 130-140s that it normally is. Thank goodness the Ultrasound tech was there finishing up another appointment so I could get in, as it turns out baby’s head is just really *really* really low (no wonder I’ve been feeling so much pressure and walking is so uncomfortable these last few days!). I’ve been instructed to eat more food (anyone else completely lose their appetite at this point?) to help give baby more fuel, and to up my sugar intake to see if that gets baby moving so I can do some kick counts for the rest of the day. I tried to play it off really ‘cool’ in my appointment, but I’m not gonna lie, PgAL brain really reared its ugly head. Feeling slightly accomplished, as we finally got my Birth Center bag packed, and tons of snacks ready to go, and I’m getting more and more excited and anxious to see this sweet new face. 38 weeks! And feeling EVERY bit of it… Baby Bear’s heartbeat was 131-138 yesterday at the midwife appointment, and they had to get the ultrasound machine out again because they couldn’t discern between Bear’s head and bottom - turns out baby’s head is even more ginormous than it was a few weeks ago, and baby’s bottom is quite round. I feel like there are so many jokes I could make here, but in all honesty, baby will fit in just perfectly with those attributes ;) We had an almost rain storm here this past weekend and I had SO many tightening sensations (Aka: hypnobirthing speak for contractions), that I was almost positive something was going to happen. But here I am, still *very* pregnant (as all the clerks at the gas station where I get my ice chips love to comment on), and still totally unprepared. My midwife bet me that I’ll be going into labor by the 15th, and doesn’t think I’ll go past 39 weeks based on the symptoms I’ve been having and the crazy things my body has been doing. This week I’m feeling SO pumped about this baby. About this birth. About my doula. About my team of midwives. About everything. I know my body is so much stronger this time, and I’m thinking as positively as possible to allow it all to happen as I know it should. I am feeling so strong in my choice of birthing team, and waiting to meet this sweet rainbow baby and see his or her face literally makes me cry happy tears when I think about it. Anyone else have to ditch their contacts during pregnancy? My poor eyes can't handle them, and I ran out of contacts while I was pregnant with H and I just never replaced them, so I'm ALWAYS in glasses. Hulk Jr (aka: H) broke my favorite glasses over a year ago, and I've been on the hunt for a great pair of glasses that I won't be embarrassed to be seen in ever since (seriously, I know it's super vain, but I've always hated how I look in glasses!). Some of my fondest childhood memories involve my parents reading to me. It was them taking the time out of their busy days to sit down and open up one of my favorite books, and while I don’t remember each and every single time we read together, I can remember them always saying “yes” to one more book, and never turning me down when I would ask to go to the library for new ones. One of my favorite things about H is that he has the same love for reading and books that I did as a child, and I hope to be able to do everything I can to encourage him to continue on that path. It warms my heart when I see him sitting in the living room, books strewn all around him, and watching him talk and read to himself, telling his own story according to how he sees it. @bookroo_love has made it easier for me to keep giving H new books, with new stories and new pictures to gasp and awe over. Dad finally got home after a loooooooooooooooong week away for work, so we celebrated by all getting dressed and heading out on the town for dinner! Thirty. Seven. Weeks!!! I'M HAVING A BABY THIS MONTH, you guys!! Holy guacamole, this is really getting real! At our midwife appointment yesterday, baby's heartbeat was between 120-130 and H loves helping the MW find the sound with the Doppler 💕 She said Bear is feeling like it might be a smaller baby, and that she can feel a LOT of fluids, ha, and they told me that as of 37 weeks, they will let me deliver if things start happening, which is just crazy! I'm still hoping baby Bear "cooks" for at least 2 more weeks so we can make it to technical full term (39 weeks), because of all the important growth and development that takes place in these final weeks, but just knowing it could basically be any time now makes me jittery with excitement and nerves! To make things even more real, my placenta encapsulator dropped off my cooler! Did anyone else do encapsulation? Or do you think it's totally weird? My husband is totally grossed out by the thought that I'll be "eating where baby grew", but it's totally fascinating to me! I'm not so much worried about my milk production, but I am worried about the PPD issues I faced after H's birth, and the perinatal anxieties and depression I have gone through with my miscarriage and this pregnancy. I want to have all the tools to be the best woman, mother and wife I can be after birth, and everything I've researched and heard via anecdotal stories from friends has suggested that placenta encapsulation is something I should try! - Mamas, tell me all about your pregnancies, the good, the bad, the ugly! And this is how mom life goes: mama needs to take pictures for a post, and tiny tornado needs some love and snuggles. Anyone else have a super snuggler? As much of a technical interruption his constant need for love, affection, and attention is, I have to admit: it feels SO good to be able to solve all of his problems with a hug, a snuggle, and a kiss (or 12). It’s amazing to me to watch him as he grows, so independent, so curious, and such a little daredevil, there’s not a ledge nor rock that he can resist jumping from. His legs are covered in scrapes and bruises, offering proof of his brave feats and clumsy tumbles, each one of which I’ve kissed until the tears ceased. He tries my patience, but he grows my heart and patience in ways I have never known possible, and I’m so excited to watch him blossom into the strong big brother I know he will be.
