Reader Inserts: I usually use gender neutral terms and avoid physical descriptions. There will be some occasions where I break away from this, but for the most part, this will be my standard practice. I also tend to write more things that aren’t reader inserts.

I'm VERY late on my "telling you whatever the fuck I want" homework. :')

As a present, I offer you one of the future dialogue scenes I've written for Inverse that may or may not be included in the main fic someday.

"What troubles you?"

Harry didn't flinch—but only just. It was so difficult to find places and times to be alone. Apparently he'd had no luck this time as well.

"I was just... thinking. About the kids."

There was no need to specify which kids.

Albus was at his left side in a blink. Less than, really. His sigh was deep and melancholy.

"It is despicable—how much torment they are likely experiencing even as we speak. The thought does make it difficult to stay still."

"Then let's not. We should go back," Harry bit out. "At least try to rescue someone else. If we can't tear the place down—"

"We are of one mind."

Albus turned to look at him then, full on. Those bright blue eyes were as piercing as ever, even in the clear light of dawn.

"I sought you out for that very purpose. You will, I hope, forgive the lack of proper notice."

Notice was the furthest thing from Harry's mind. Already he felt sharper, better, knowing something was going to be done. That it would be himself and Albus who were acting.

"I'm ready when you are."

Harry Potter, the IT guy

I'm still thinking about @existingtm's ask about Harry not finding out that he's a wizard until he's an adult. And while I'm not sure if I am going to finish this, I reeeeeeally liked the idea (and I'm not a huge 'Harry becomes a wizard late' trope kind of person! ...Or am I?). But here's a lil something I've written wherein Harry is being followed/watched because Sirius Black has just broken out of Azkaban after Ron's rat was recognized in The Daily Prophet as "Oldest Rat... Ever!" And Harry thinks he's having a mental health crisis.

The whole world was watching him.

At least, it felt that way.

Logically, he knew it couldn’t be true. He was just a guy. He had a normal job. He wasn’t involved in anything shady. He didn’t even really socialize—just a few drinks with his neighbor sometimes, the annual Christmas party put on by his boss, or a short conversation about bicycles with the bank teller.

Since August, Harry had started to notice people noticing him. Glances that lingered a bit too long, awkwardly long conversations with strangers at the launderette, people in odd outfits watching him on his morning run. It had been piling up for months. Now that it was November, he was certain that he had accidentally hacked into some government spy server, or he was losing his mind.

It was a Friday evening, and he was watching the condensation dribble down his beer glass. The seat beside him was empty—Ron had gone to the toilet, and Harry waited for his return, trying to ignore the fact that a middle-aged man with a cold expression had come into the pub, scanned the patrons until he spotted Harry, and then moved to sit at table across the room where he opened a book and forgot to order anything.

Perhaps it might not have been so troubling if Ron’s reappearance wasn’t arrested by the surprise he had upon noticing the man at the table. Then, however, he blinked and started back toward Harry, smiling warily.

“Do you know him?” said Harry when Ron sat down again.

Ron opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He seemed to be thinking very hard as he followed Harry’s gaze.

“Er—who?” said Ron. His voice was very casual. Too casual? “That bloke with the book?”

“Yeah. You looked surprised to see him.”

Ron shrugged. “I dunno. Looks familiar. Maybe a friend of my dad’s or something. Dad knows everyone.”

For a moment, Harry waited for Ron to confess everything. He needed Ron to confirm that all of what Harry imagined was true—the fact that Ron had been following him around the grocery store for weeks or that it was no coincidence that Ron had moved into the same building as Harry. He needed to know that there was some government conspiracy that Harry must have accidentally tripped into, and now they were keeping tabs on him just in case he decided to sell the information to the mob.

But then they settled into conversation again, and Ron told him about how he was getting really annoyed at his coworker for forgetting to file all of the reports on whatever it was they were working on, and the exchange felt so ordinary, that Harry felt incredibly stupid. A secret government operative, he thought, feeling his face grow warm. Bloody stupid. Listen to yourself. Oh yes, I’m Harry the IT guy, and I’m being followed by government spies.

“…and then the idiot says, ‘Oh, didn’t know we had to keep stuff like that.’ And I sort of blew up at him. ‘Course, it caused a bit of a scene, and now everyone thinks I’m a bit barmy…”

Harry caught the eyes of the man with the book who quickly turned his gaze down. Ron glanced behind him at the man too.

“Keeps looking at me,” Harry muttered.

“Should I tell him to piss off?”

Harry groaned and dropped his face into his hands, cursing under his breath. Christ, he’d been so close. He’d been so close to having a friend, but Ron was about to hear the stupidest thing come out of Harry’s mouth because Harry couldn’t take it anymore. Someone had to know that Harry was ill.

“What’s the matter?”

Cautiously, Harry peered through his fingers at Ron and then lifted his head, his face hot.

“I think I’m crazy or something.”

Ron raised his brows. “You are?”

“Yeah. I’m paranoid.”

“About what?”

Determinedly, Harry ignored the man whose gaze had flickered to him again. Across the pub, hanging on the paneled wall, was a huge painting of a military officer from the eighteenth century, and Harry tried to make eye contact with it to avoid making it with Ron.

“Everything,” said Harry. “I feel like I’m being watched. All the time. I’m being followed everywhere I go—at least, it seems like it. But that’s stupid, right? Who’s going to spy on me? I’m no one.”

Ron frowned. “Dunno, mate. I don’t think you’re no one.”

A warm feeling swelled in Harry’s chest. “Er—thanks,” he said awkwardly. “But you know what I mean. I know I’m not being watched. I know that. But I’m just…”

How could he put into words what he’d always been hiding? It wasn’t just the recent episodes of casual stalking, but a lifetime of oddities. Things happening around him that he couldn’t explain. Noticing stuff no one else did.

If it was some sort of syndrome, it was worsening. Someone needed to know. Or rather, Harry needed someone to know.

“I looked it up online,” Harry said. With a fingertip, he smeared the sweat of his beer glass into the tabletop. “I think I could have schizophrenia.”

“What’s that?”

Now it was Harry’s turn to raise his brows. “Er—you know, the mental disorder? I guess you can get really paranoid when you have it because you can get delusions and stuff. You don’t know what schizophrenia is?”

“Er—I mean. Sure,” said Ron. “Yeah, I’ve heard of it.” His ears were starting to redden. It seemed like he was trying to keep himself from looking over his shoulder. “But,” he said slowly, “you probably don’t have it. You seem okay to me.”

“Because I’m good at hiding it,” Harry told him. “I’ve had hallucinations my whole life. My aunt and uncle knew about it, and they always tried to keep me shut up like they were scared someone would find out. It hasn’t really been a problem before. It’s just…I think it’s getting worse.”

“It can’t be that bad,” Ron insisted weakly. “You seem normal to me.”

Harry forced a laugh. “Am I? Did you know, I thought you were a government spy for a while? I kept thinking you were tailing me when I went grocery shopping.”

For a moment, he avoided looking at Ron, horrified that he’d actually admitted the truth. Why did he say that? Ron was his sole friend, and now Harry had confessed that he initially believed Ron was his friend only because some shady government office had sent him to gain Harry’s trust.

There was the sound of coins dropping on the table. Ron was paying for their drinks. Expressionless. Something dropped in Harry’s stomach.

“I’m s—”

“I want to watch TV,” Ron cut him off. “And I’ve got beers and a frozen pizza.”

“Guess I’ll see you later.”

“I don’t know how to work it.”

“What? The TV?”

“Yep. Can you show me?”

“Er—okay.”

Harry had never been to Ron’s flat.

Within a handful of months, Ron had made the place his own—and that meant dishes in the sink and a lump of discarded socks and underwear outside the bathroom door and half-empty coffee mugs on the table. He invited Harry to sit on the sofa but not before he’d wiped a few crumbs off the cushion first.

While Ron fetched beers from the kitchen, Harry sat awkwardly on the sofa, trying not to catalog everything he spotted on the table and classifying each object as suspect or typical of a twenty-something government employee.  The coffee table was overflowing with mail, empty cans, pens, scratch paper, and to his astonishment, a newspaper. But the remarkable thing about the newspaper was that the photographs were moving. Harry looked away. No, he thought. Photographs don’t move.

“Er—Harry?” Ron’s voice came from beyond a short corridor. “Could—er—could you help me with the oven? I can’t seem to—er—”

When Harry came into the kitchen, Ron was standing sheepishly beside the oven.

“Dunno how to turn it on.”

“What’s the oven temperature supposed to be?”

Ron shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Are you trying to make a pizza?”

It turned out, Ron had never made a frozen pizza before, nor had he, apparently, ever used an oven. Perhaps Ron had grown up in a very privileged family, Harry thought, or maybe it was that his parents cooked everything. The simplicity of turning a knob on the oven to the heat mark that matched the one on the pizza box seemed to bewilder him.

“Then we just have to wait until the oven is hot,” Harry finished.

Ron handed him a bottle of Stella Artois. Harry almost laughed. It felt a bit like Ron had read a manual on how to appear like a normal guy in his twenties. I’ve got beers and a frozen pizza. But he couldn’t work an oven.

For a minute, Harry stared at the bottle.

“Tell me I should go to the doctor,” Harry muttered. “Because I have this stupid voice in my head that thinks you’re some sort of undercover government operative that’s investigating me for, I dunno, international intrigue.”

To his credit, Ron didn’t laugh. Instead, he heaved a huge sigh and nodded back to the living room.

“Yeah. About that…”

Once again, Harry took a seat, but Ron paced a bit first, clearly considering how he was going to frame it what he wanted to say.

“Look, I’m not supposed to tell you anything, unless it’s an emergency,” warned Ron. “But…if you’re about to go checking yourself into some hospital because you think you’re losing your mind, then…I should just tell you. That’s an emergency to me.” He wrinkled his nose. “Damn. I should get someone else to—”

“Could you just spit it out?”

“Yeah. Yeah, all right. Listen, Harry, you’re not crazy.”

“But—”

Ron shook his head. “You’re not. The thing is, I am sort of an undercover government operative…but you’re not in trouble or anything. The truth is…it’s…” When finally, he could hesitate no more, he groaned. “You’re going to think I’m out of my mind. I’m what’s called an Auror. It’s like a—a detective. Except that I mostly go after dark wizards.”

“Wizards? Is that code for something?”

“No. I mean like wizards wizards. Like, magic, yeah?”

Harry blinked and looked down, his face burning. Ron was making fun of him now, was he? He wanted to press the cold bottle against his face.

“See?” said Ron. “You think I’m mad. Well, have a look at that newspaper. It’s one of our papers. I know Muggle papers don’t have moving photographs, do they?”

It was called The Daily Prophet. The headline read SIRIUS BLACK STILL AT LARGE, and the photograph of a very thin man with a mass of matted black hair blinked slowly with expressionless eyes up at him. Harry flattened out the front page, trying to figure out the technology behind it.

“This is a very weird joke,” Harry muttered.

“Here,” said Ron, rummaging in his pocket for a long, thin piece of wood. “This is my wand. I’ll show you. Wingardium leviosa!”

The entire table lifted off the floor—a few cans shuddered and fell with clunks to the rug. Ron seemed to be directing the table with the thing he called a wand before he set it back down and shrugged at Harry.

“That’s got to be proof enough.”

“Not really. Are there any wires attached here?”

“Okay, then,” said Ron. “Here. You take my wand. And—er—give it a go.”

Feeling incredibly foolish, Harry took it.

You didn't even know it was a selkie's pup. You were having your usual morning walk along the beach when you came across a seal pup wiggling in the sand, wrapped in a fishing net. You untangle the little thing and wonder if you should be calling wildlife services, but the pup hurries into the water with a bark. That's the end of that encounter, or so you think.

You start receiving gifts on the doorstep of your beach house. Some days you find freshly caught fish and oysters, and other days you get colorful shells and iridescent pearls. One morning, you wake up earlier than usual and look out the window to see a figure scurrying away, wrapped in what looks like seal skin.

That's when you realize you must have helped a selkie. You've never seen one before, but the locals talk about them all the time. One warm afternoon you're making lunch in your kitchen when there's a knock on your door. You open up to find a female selkie dripping on your doorstep.

"Hello," she says shyly.

You smile and welcome her in. She thanks you for saving her pup and says that she hopes her gifts were sufficient. You offer her cake and warm mint tea, which she happily accepts. She clearly hasn't been around humans much, and she's quite obvious with her intentions when she asks you if you have a mate. Such a beautiful and kind human shouldn't be without a mate, she explains, and it would be her honor to be yours.

sadism awakening from seeing their crush hiss and flinch from getting their wounds cleaned up. sadism awakening from pressing too hard on a bruise and hearing them whimper. sadism awakening from being looked at gratefully by their partner with blood still running down their face and their lip swelling up. sadism awakening that makes them feel guilty and squirmy about liking this, and even more so when they feel jealous that they weren’t the one to leave them in this state.

Drabble 56/365 - Assassin’s Creed

Evie inhales sharply as Jayadeep cleans the cut on her chin. Her head jerks minutely from his hands, as though stopping herself from recoiling.

“I’m sorry.” True, for more reasons than he’d dare admit.

“Thank you,” she breathes. “I knew I could rely on you.”

She’s worried the split of her lip into bleeding anew, and her bruised eye is swelling. There’s nothing he should feel but concern. Evie winces at a grazed bruise, shuts her eyes against tears, and he guiltily wishes she’d let them fall. Terrible desire grips him to savor her vulnerability.

“Always,” he promises, denying it.

Ghosts in Our Faces (Harry Wells x Nonbinary Reader)

It’s the staring that gets to you. Not the barbed comments, the irritation in his voice, or him recoiling from your presence. It’s when he thinks you’re not looking, so he stares.

It must be the body, something in the brain. Thawne had done it too. You hadn’t thought much of it then, knowing how he let his own thoughts simmer in that time. But now…It makes your skin crawl.

You can’t help but snap back at Harry. The tension of those moments builds, every extended second he stares, simmering under the surface. It’s not like he’s overly rude to you in comparison to the others. But there’s an added distance, which somehow hurts more.

Part of you wants to ask him why he stares. Why he hates everything so much. But the other part of you knows doing so will unearth something sharp and painful. So, you ignore it.

You bring him coffee the way he likes, and he seems surprised the first time you do. But at the same time…not surprised at all. He bites out something about you standing around like an idiot, and the moment passes.

One night, you have to turn back to the lab after realizing you forgot your phone. The halls are dark. You hear music playing faintly ahead. It stops you in your tracks. The song is familiar, something Harry had once called “grating noise.” You creep into the lab entrance and peer inside.

There, working by the light of a desk lamp, sits Harry Wells. It wasn’t your imagination. He’s listening to that song you’ve been playing on repeat for the past month. You smile and creep away.

Searching the rest of the place for your phone turns out to be futile. You sweat a little as you realize you’ll have to check the lab Harry’s in. Upon returning, you linger in the doorway for another moment, putting off the inevitable awkwardness. You don’t know why, but going in there feels more intimate than what you’re prepared for.

Before you can so much as clear your throat, Harry holds up your phone without turning around. 

“Forgetting something?”

Awkward. “Yeah, thanks,” you answer, striding over to take it.

He still doesn’t move even as it leaves his hand. Silence stretches between you.

Something pushes you to ask, finally, “Did I do something to piss you off?”

Harry pauses and turns his head a fraction to look at you from the side. “Did you do something to piss me off?” he parrots, tone near incredulous. “No. Now get out of here and go home.” He goes back to his work like that’s the end of the conversation.

Irritation flares in your chest. “Who says I’m going home?” you ask.

He doesn’t acknowledge your words, but you see him stiffen up. You push again.

“I have other things to do besides going from work to home and home to work.”

Harry finally responds, setting his tool on the table with a little too much force. “It would be stupid not to go home considering what we’re facing.” He turns to face you. You feel a spark of victory, consequences be damned.

“We’re always facing something. I can’t stop living for every threat,” you shoot back.

That seems to strike a nerve. Harry shoots to his feet. He tries to compose himself, holding his hands out like a plea, then covering his mouth. He fails and grabs both your arms.

“You will. You will if we don’t get Zoom. Why don’t you understand?” He shakes you once, like maybe that’ll get the idea through. “He will kill you.”

You stare at him in shock. Never has Harry willingly made contact with you. “He could kill any of us,” you answer.

Something flickers in Harry’s eyes. He shakes his head, the smallest of movements. “No, it’s not—” He releases you but keeps looking at your face like he’ll find an answer there. Moments pass without anything being said. Harry finally seems to realize the answer he’s searching for doesn't exist. He turns and falls back into his seat. Another moment, then—

“You knew me. In my world, you knew me.”

Your heart drops at his confession. Knew. Past tense.

“I’m dead there.”

He winces, squeezes his eyes shut. You both let the words hang.

At last, you know what has to be said.

“It wasn’t me. Like you’re not this world’s Wells or…” You hesitate. “Or Thawne.”

He looks up. “Oh, but you are. In pieces at least. I’m sure I’m like this world’s Wells in pieces too.”

You can’t deny that.

“Their ghost looks at me through your eyes,” he says, and an arrow seems to pierce your heart. You know the feeling. The lingering looks, Wells—Thawne—haunting the room.

You let out a long breath and nod, propping yourself up against the table next to Harry. “I see ghosts too.”

Harry folds over, head in his hands. You aren’t sure what to do, so you awkwardly place a hand on his shoulder and squeeze. A minute or two passes. He finally lifts his head, and you see his face is damp.

“You’re right,” he says suddenly. “They would’ve told me that things would be okay. You know better.”

You let your hand fall from his shoulder, mulling that over. Finally, you respond, “Things can be okay. I have to believe that. But…I won’t try to comfort you for my own sake.”

Harry stares at you, appearing to have a revelation. “You won’t try to save me?” he asks.

You blink. Oh. Oh. So that’s what happened.

You fix him with a level look. “I can’t save you if I can’t save myself, Harry.”

The tension finally frees itself from his body. He leans back, for the first time, looking at you like he actually wants to. You give him a tired smile. Understanding at last.

Another beat passes. “You know,” he begins. “If I hadn’t met my wife, I might have accepted your proposal.”

“Aaaaand, that’s deeper than I want to go,” you say, putting up a pretense of disinterest for both your sakes. Harry turns around to hide the small quirk of his mouth.

“Good. Now go,” he says, shooing you off. You leave with a spring in your step.

At least nothing changed too much between you. You strongly suspect Harry was joking about the proposal. He did that thing he does with his voice whenever he’s taking the piss. Still…you can’t deny that the idea of proposing to him…well.

Picture with me a Harry who only finds out he has magic as an adult because the Order decided the Muggle world would be safer for him...

Of course, that only lasts so long, and he suddenly has to learn everything about the WW as a grown ass man with a job. Because Twisty the Snake Man apparently blasted him with magic as an infant. Which turns out to be part of why his shitty "normal" family treated him like shit.

And, naturally, everyone in magic land is even more suspicious of him since he's a grown ass man who can't be assimilated as easily as a child. So awkward.

Also, Serious the Magical Serial Killer, who betrayed Harry's parents, has apparently broken out of magical Alcatraz to kill him.

Wait, hold on. Let's make Harry twenty-three.

It's 2003, and Harry's life is incredibly ordinary but he's worked hard to get where he is. He's working in IT because he was decent at computers in school, and he took an apprenticeship fixing computers which led him to where he is now--a guy with an ok amount of cash flow and an ok job and an ok car.

He makes a decent living, and the future looks pretty bright for IT guys. It's not a terrible life, honestly, and he worked hard to get here. As soon as he could rent his own place, he's been living alone. He doesn't really have friends because he doesn't spend money on going out, and he learned fairly early on that it's hard to keep friends when you work so much. But he knows computers. He knows how to fix anything, and now that it's the dawn of the tech era, for the first time in his life, he finally holds a bit of power (the keeper of passwords, sees everyone's browsing history, etc.). Again, he's worked hard to get here.

He has a bit of a secret, though. There's something wrong about him. He's always tended to notice things that other people don't like funky shops or pubs that no one has heard of. He's pretty sure he has magical powers, but that sounds stupid and no he doesn't, he must've just imagined his water glass refilling itself or the full conversation he had with a garden snake.

Now, there's even odder stuff happening around him. Is he being followed? He keeps noticing the same redheaded guy at the grocery store shopping the same aisles as him, and Harry is particularly suspicious when that same guy moves into a flat in Harry's building. But the guy is all right--his name is Ron, and Ron works for the government or something. Okay, and maybe Ron's actually cool and sure, it's all a bit odd, but it's sort of nice to go down to the pub with someone his age. And okay, maybe Ron is his friend now?

But the strange things keep piling up: he can't help feeling that he's being watched all the time. Even at work, there's a new guy named Kingsley who seems to notice every time Harry's in the room. Feeling unsettled, Harry confesses to Ron that he thinks he's losing his mind and maybe he ought to check himself into a hospital for mental health or something.

Ron, unable to hold it back any longer, tells Harry the truth. About magic, about Voldemort, about everything. Ron tells him the reason why Harry's being followed is because a dark wizard broke out of prison, probably to kill Harry.

Anyway, Harry is forced to weigh his feelings about it all. He's worked so hard to get where he is, and apparently, there aren't computers in the magical world. But it seems he's got a massive vault in a bank underground? And he's famous? And also, there's a murderer who's after him? Does he even want to assimilate into a world that left him to fend for himself?

And when the escaped prisoner finally catches Harry alone, he's absolutely livid.

I have SO MANY that I literally don't know what to choose, I've got decision paralysis 😭 let me list a few, and maybe if anyone wants elaboration, I can go from there? If anyone even reads this? I definitely want to post something new on Ao3 soon!!!

Knock Knock (Who's There?): (KakaNaru)

When Naruto moves into his new apartment following his return to the village after training with Jiraiya for two years, he doesn't expect it to come with a roommate. But when he opens his closet, it seems to lead into... another apartment. One inhabited by a quiet teenager in a dog ANBU mask.

Naruto is nothing if not good at making friends. Nobody can blame Hound for getting attached, can they?

OR: Naruto's closet leads to another dimension— one where a younger Kakashi is drowning in ANBU. Good thing he's got a cute new neighbor intent on keeping him company.

-Dimension travel! An alternate version of Kakashi exists in a mirror world, which is somehow connected via Naruto's new closet.

-(alternate) Kakashi falls fast and hard and is pretty much fiending, he's so touch starved and so emotionally repressed. He takes one look at Naruto and he's gone.

-Naruto is so accepting of him and free of any judgement that it's impossible for (alternate) Kakashi not to get attached.

-Big Kakashi still very much exists and is very much horrified when it all clicks together. He was a hellion at 17, and now that version of himself has latched onto Naruto? Are you shitting him?

-Basically (alternate) Kakashi being down bad, Naruto being cheerful as ever, and yeah. Shenanigans.

-The Uchiha clan hasn't died yet in (alternate) Kakashi's dimension either. Food for thought.

Deep Down: (KakaNaru)

Naruto gets hit by a jutsu that scrambles not only his chakra, but his memories as well. He can't seem to recall anything. Somehow, this leads to him taking one look at Kakashi and assuming that hey, this must be his husband.

Kakashi, in love with Naruto for years now but never planning to act on it, panics. Worse, Sakura says going against what Naruto says could confuse him and make the injury worse. Kakashi needs to play along.

OR: Naruto loses his memory, assumes Kakashi is his husband, and Kakashi suffers through a dream he knows will inevitably end when Naruto fully remembers.

-A few years post war and Kakashi's feelings are so severe that it's starting to affect him in real life. He can barely work without zoning out thinking of Naruto. When Naruto is around, all he can do is stare.

-When Naruto loses his memory, he sees that stare— which is filled with blatant affection— and makes the natural leap to "this must be my husband."

-Kakashi is in heaven but suffering too. This is exactly what he wants, but it'll go away once Naruto remembers And now that he's gotten a taste, he's desperate for more, more, more.

-Naruto eventually remembers but doesn't really mention it, because he's a little shit.

Darker Still: (ShikaNaru)

When the war goes sideways, all Shikamaru can seem to focus on is Naruto. Still so bright and bold and full of life even as the world falls apart around them, all he wants to do is know more. He wants everything Naruto will give him. He wants to know his favorite color and why, his height, his preferred ramen flavor, how he sleeps, the pitches of his laughter, how many crinkles form by his eyes when he smiles, what he smells like, what he tastes like.

Nara's thrive on knowledge, and sometimes they fixate. Coincidentally, time traveling to the past doesn't fix this. If anything, it only makes it worse

OR: Shikamaru is obsessed with Naruto, Naruto is blissfully unaware of how deeply, and they're going to save the world.

-Literally just Shikamaru wanting to know every last bit of information about Naruto. No matter how small, he will hoard every scrap, will swallow it whole.

-They time travel and no, this doesn't fix the obsession. Shikamaru is awful about it. Stalkerish levels of awful. He just wants to follow Naruto everywhere and touch him all the time.

-Everyone is beyond fucking confused.

-Naruto is out here saving the world, Shikamaru is just here to stare at him while he does it.

A Soul That Rings: (ItaNaru)

Soulmates are all up to chance, and so rare they're practically a thing of myth. You've got to touch them to know, at which point you both get your "mark". They're so uncommon that Itachi is certain he's in the clear, right up until the point where he touches Naruto Uzumaki right before his fight with Sasuke and orange streaks shoot up his arm.

Everyone knows that one soulmate can't die until the other does. It's basically a guarantee that you'll live a long, happy life together unless someone can get you both at the same time. Soulmates are engineered to die from old age together, passing on at the same moment. If Sasuke tries to kill Itachi now... It's not going to stick.

OR: Itachi accidentally finds out Naruto is his soulmate right before he goes off to let Sasuke kill him, and news flash. Not only is Naruto stubborn as all hell, he is exceedingly hard to kill.

-Soulmates are so rare that some people straight up claim they don't exist. They're seriously one in a million. Worse, once you meet them, it's impossible to die unless someone can off you both at the exact same time.

-Itachi is basically anchored to life via Naruto. Even his chronic illness won't kill him. As long as Naruto lives, it literally doesn't matter what happens. The link will keep him alive.

-Naruto isn't letting this go. Itachi can try to run and hide if he wants, but guess what? Naruto has a built in Itachi-sensor now, and that shit will lead him right to him.

-Itachi with nine orange streaks twisting up his arm and Naruto with bright red flames, the color of Itachi's susanoo up his

-Sasuke has never been angrier

Dream A Little Dream: (ItaNaru)

Before Itachi fights Sasuke, he runs into Naruto in the woods, intent on transferring the Kotoamatsukami to him (aka, Shisui's eye) so that Naruto can later free Sasuke from manipulation if he needs to. However, something goes wrong. When Itachi traps Naruto in a genjutsu to do this, he realizes he... can't seem to break it. Something is wrong.

Now trapped with Naruto in an illusion neither of them can seem to get out of, the truth about Itachi's entire past unravels. Pretty soon, Sasuke isn't the only Uchiha that Naruto wants to save, and Itachi finds Naruto impossible to look away from.

OR: Trapped for nearly a year in a genjutsu, Naruto peels into Itachi like one would an orange, and Itachi finds out what loving the human embodiment of the sun is like.

-The genjutsu is basically a barren wasteland devoid of any life aside from themselves, and Naruto is the type of person who can't shut up for more than five minutes

-An invisible force keeps them from getting too far apart, so no. Itachi can't run, hide, and wait it out.

-Naruto notices immediately that Itachi seems ill and is so annoying that eventually, Itachi gives up and tells him everything.

-In the process he also somehow falls head over heels for Naruto and finds a will to live, so at least there's that?

-Idk, I'm a simple girl. I want down bad Itachi, I create down bad Itachi.

Knock Knock (Who's There?):

Naruto’s has a subconscious fondness for dogs bc of seeing Kakashi’s mask as a kid. He might not remember it but that doesn’t stop him from liking every dog he’s ever met as a result.

17 yr old Kakashi is profiting so hard off it.

And from the fact this Naruto would rather go to his “neighbors” apartment and cook food for them both than brave Konoha’s market as he knows it.

If (alternate) Kakashi starts stocking his kitchen full of everything he can think of who’s there to judge him?

But dude is still a traumatized 17 yr old primarily living on mission rations so he doesn’t rly know what normal kitchens look like anymore than Naruto does. 10 eggplants, a carton of eggs, a bag of rice, and vegetable stock? Good enough. Naruto’s very impressed, but if anyone else saw it they’d be horrified.

If alternate kakashi also makes other adjustments to his home in attempts to lure Naruto in more (like a stray cat) that’s his business too.

Also, scene where alt kakashi asks about why he never sees Naruto with a Jonin vest on. Naruto, half asleep, mumbles about being a genin still and Kakashi freeeeeeezes bc wtf do you mean. Naruto has more chakra than god and he’s a fucking genin???

Deep Down: (KakaNaru)

Thinking of a scene where Naruto tries to have sex with kakashi but that’s a few (million) steps too far for kakashi to lie about so he keeps rebuffing him or making excuses. His restraint is very much tested every single time but he holds to it. Eventually he goes home to Naruto having a straight up meltdown bc he thinks he did something wrong or that kakashi doesn’t like him anymore.

Darker Still: (ShikaNaru)

Shikaku watching his son stare unblinking at Naruto as he curls up with their deer: oh shit. HONEY WE NEED TO MOVE TO SUNA!

A Soul That Rings: (ItaNaru)

Sasuke kicking his feet drawing hearts around his and Naruto’s name in Orochimaru’s lab: after I kill orochimaru and itachi we’ll be together forever. 💕

Keep thinking of them both getting bored as fuck in there and basically learning everything there is to know about the other to pass the time.

And since they’re shinobi, they train. And fight. It’s what they do.

Soooo many fighting montages between scenes of them laying next to each other and talking about everything and nothing.

Also them just always always staring at eachother because everything else is so bland and boring here.

Naruto realizes Itachi’s vision is fucked when he’s not using his sharingan and when they get closer starts tracing his eyelids with his finger.

Knock Knock (Who's There?): (KakaNaru)

Kakashi, at this point in his life, has nothing. ANBU is all he's holding onto. He's not allowed to see baby Naruto, his sensei is dead, his friends are gone, and he feels like the ultimate failure. He feels cursed.

It's practically an out of body experience to see this head of gold hair and pair of sleepy blue eyes peering back at him through his closet door. At first Kakashi wants nothing to do with him, mostly out of fear that he'll hurt him somehow, but Naruto takes one look at him and is instantly like "you're my new best friend".

Lots of napping together and Kakashi coming home from hard missions and finding a little slice of paradise away from it all in Naruto's home. Kakashi can barely stand his own apartment, but Naruto's is well-lived in, full of knick knacks and photos. Naruto is such a tactile and touchy person too, it's nothing to him to grab Kakashi and manhandle him wherever he wants. Kakashi is always, always welcome. Naruto will never turn him away.

He never asks him to take his ANBU mask off, either. And when he eventually does, he kind of just squints and is like "oh, I didn't know Kakashi-sensei had a cousin". This Kakashi smells different, his chakra is different, his mannerisms are different, he figures it's not the same person— and really, he isn't technically wrong. It helps that 17 year old Kakashi doesn't wear a mask around Naruto. When he removed his hound mask for the first time, it's just his bare face underneath.

Kakashi adores him. He brings him gifts just so he'll smile, put himself in positions that Naruto is forced to touch him in some way— close enough to the sink that Naruto has to wedge past him to get by, hovering behind him so Naruto will bump into him when he turns, etc.

Even Sakura meets him and is like "Okay... weird. I didn't know Kakashi-sensei had family. Especially this freaky one who barely talks and stares at Naruto all the time." Eventually they bring it up with their teacher who's like "I... don't have family 🤨 who are you talking about?"

17 year old Kakashi figures the dimension stuff all out pretty fast but like hell he's jeopardizing his ability to see Naruto by mentioning it.

Dream A Little Dream: (ItaNaru)

Itachi had only peripherally known Naruto, and he'd known him pretty much the way everyone else does— holder of the nine tails, kind of an idiot, kind of annoying. It's a huge shock to him to meet him and learn how quiet he can get, how insightful he is, and how easy it is to feel comfortable around him after such a short amount of time.

After a few weeks of being stuck, Itachi starts to fear something irreversible happened. If it was temporary, he'd have been able to break it by then. He starts to really open up to Naruto, and he's kind of helplessly drawn in.

It helps that Naruto is needlessly kind. They're in a genjutsu. None of this is real. There's no point in fighting so Naruto doesn't bother. Instead, he takes a look at Itachi and sees a man who's been worn down and who maybe needs someone, and he has a gut feeling there's more to him than there seems.

Naruto kind of wars with his undying loyalty to Sasuke, but he and Itachi are literally doing everything together. They can't go very far from one another. They're trapped, and Itachi has no reason to be cruel when there's nobody else to see, and Naruto kind of has this light bulb moment of oh, he's... actually really gentle, isn't he?

They have a lot of carefree moments because there are no expectations and there's nothing they can do. They can go cannonball in a lake, and count the stars, and find pictures in the clouds, and play high stakes tag just because they can. Naruto is the very definition of upbeat and fun, and for Itachi it's exhilarating.

Itachi gets into this mindset of, having had very little good things in life, he should take what he can get now. Naruto is a reprieve and he tries so hard not to touch, but his illness has progressed so far, and he's so tired, and he can't see, and he's ready for it to be over. He's been ready, and Naruto is so warm and wants to know his favorite food, and his favorite color, and his birthday, and asks if he's okay, and when was the last time someone cared?

Naruto has suffered so much in life and Itachi has too, and they connect and seriously just... fall into place. Itachi just feels this overwhelming warmth bloom in him. Naruto actually smiles at him, and he can't remember the last time someone genuinely did that. Naruto cares, and Itachi is rendered helpless by it. After months and months, it's simply impossible to resist.

had an idea that was basically "Harry forgets his glamour" and it turned into this:

Albus was quite familiar by now with the contours of Harry's face—his sharp jaw, the dimples in his cheeks when he smiled, the gleam of his long eyelashes—so he noticed right away when there was a mark on his beloved's face that wasn't present before.

Dismay hit him first, for the wound was clearly very old and permanent, and thus might be causing his lover considerable pain. Confusion crept in next, when he leaned over his sleeping paramour, took his own thumb and swept it across Harry's forehead, ignoring the low puzzled sound that accompanied Harry stirring.

"Hmm?"

"What is this, Harry?" he asked softly, and punctuated the question with another gentle sweep of his thumb across this odd, lightning-bolt scar.

The contact between his skin and Harry's meant he felt the latter's flinch right away.

"I..."

Albus' auburn brows drew together. The hesitation told him more than words could. The scar was indeed not new—and Harry had not expected to ever have to answer for it.

"How long have you had this, love?"

Harry's body sagged back into the mattress. The endearment seemed to ease something in him that had been drawing tight and tighter still. Reassurance that he was still adored tended to do that.

His belated answer was: "As long as I can remember."

Albus decided, without telegraphing such, that he would tread more cautiously to solve this mystery.

"And does it pain you?"

"...It used to, sometimes. It doesn't anymore."

"It appears to be a curse scar." Albus allowed his forefinger to join his thumb at Harry's forehead, stroking and measuring the little shape. "You mentioned once that your parents were murdered when you were very young. Perhaps this happened then?"

"I think so. Yeah."

Harry wasn't cold, but his sentences were definitely more clipped than usual; Albus could hear the aversion to this topic clear as day in his voice. But he couldn't help the questions brimming at the edge of his mind, desperate to have their turn in the sun.

"The person who did this to you—"

"—he's dead," Harry interjected at once, reaching for Albus' free hand and rubbing at it until it unclenched. He was good at reading the fluctuations of temperature in the air and matching them to Albus' mood, adjusting accordingly. "Been dead for years. I found out who he was, and I killed him."

Albus exhaled. He had ended more than enough lives himself, but he never liked to think of Harry having to kill. Of people who might, inexplicably, wish to kill Harry and thus need to be stopped.

But that did not answer the question he was truly stuck on. Harry was extremely handsome, but was also the furthest thing from vain. He would not have hidden the scar simply to lie about how he looked, or to improve his romantic prospects. (He looked, in fact, more complete with it visible, in a way Albus could only appreciate the more that he looked at Harry.) But with vanity out of the question, and the perpetrator beyond the reach of Albus' retribution...

He inhaled, and asked, "...Why did you feel you needed to hide it?"

From me remained unspoken, but not unheard.

Harry's cheeks flushed. His brilliant green eyes flickered downward toward his own bare chest, and stayed there.

"The scar... makes me stand out. For a long time, that was dangerous, so I got accustomed to hiding it. And once I didn't have to anymore..."

He swallowed; Albus moved his questing hand away from Harry's forehead and up to his hair, stroking slowly and encouragingly through it.

"I didn't mean to lie to you," Harry went on, but in a whisper. "I just decided long ago that I was tired of being known by my damn scar. It's a constant reminder that I don't have my parents."

Albus' own eyes darted away for half a moment. He tried to imagine what it would have been like, gaining a noticeable curse scar every time he lost a member of his family. His father, his mother, Ariana.

"I've kept it glamoured so long that I forgot I was doing it—I barely ever have to refresh it nowadays. Still, I should have... said something to you. Long before this, erm, started. I'm sorry—"

"Don't apologize." Albus shook his head, tapped lightly under Harry's chin so he'd look up, and their eyes could meet.

"But I did lie to you, Albus. Even if I didn't mean to."

"My concern was centered more around if you were self-conscious about the mark, or in pain and choosing to hide it. I do wish I'd known about your scar before tonight, but I cannot begrudge you the desire to blend in when it is a desire we share."

Harry's eyes were beginning to look a little shiny. A distraction was clearly in order.

Albus took stock of their immediate surroundings—but Fawkes was fast asleep in the corner, having snuck in sometime after their evening activities, so he couldn't be roused to cheer Harry up until morning. Something else, then. He extricated his hand from Harry's and placed it near Harry's belly instead, right at a spot he knew was ticklish. He grazed it, and delighted in how Harry squirmed.

"H-hey—"

"I am not upset with you," Albus said gently. He dragged his fingers back and forth, smiling at Harry's gasp and bitten-off huff of laughter. "Nothing has changed for us."

"You mean that?"

"I do." He brought his other hand back to rest in Harry's hair, stilled himself completely so that Harry might read his sincerity with one glance. It seemed to work—the younger man stopped looking as though he might cry, or bolt at any moment. "And I shall prove it. Tomorrow, you will wake to a breakfast tray of all of your favorites."

"Just because you've seen the ugly mark on my head?"

"It is the furthest thing from 'ugly'." Albus pressed his lips gently, gently to the scar he'd been ignorant of a mere hour before; he murmured the words right against Harry's skin. "But even if it managed somehow to dampen my desire for you, you would still receive breakfast in bed in the morning."

"Huh. Good to know."

"Mm, yes, knowledge is most valuable in any circumstance. Though not as valuable as getting a good night's sleep."

Harry snorted. "Subtle," he said, but his eyes were already closing, and he made no move to distance himself when Albus repositioned and tugged him closer with one arm.

That meant that when he drifted off again, quicker as always to the land of Nod than his partner, Albus had all the time he wanted to map Harry's face once more—if only to seal his true appearance in his mind's eye, to appreciate for all the mornings and breakfasts-in-bed to come.

What do you think of Harry raised by Remus? 🤔

It's an interesting concept. Logically I have doubts about why Remus would remove a child from a (financially) stable family home when he struggles to support himself and canonically runs or is always prepared to leave. Remus is a man who has spent his entire life learning that, aside from 3 or 4 remarkable exceptions, most people will not continue to care about him once they realise the burdens he has to struggle with. He would view it as inflicting himself upon others, a great misfortune he would be forcing a child to endure.

So if it were going to work, then I think the catalyst would have to come, not from Remus himself, but from an outside source. Because Remus is passive to a high degree unless he feels safe. See his interactions in POA and OOTP where he shows the most backbone only when he's near Sirius (a friend, a trusted ally- once Remus realises the truth, a pack member who would have his back) or when he's safely in the role of a Professor (a role, a shield to hide behind, an act he began learning when he was given a Prefect badge).

If I were going to explore a Remus raising Harry AU, I think the first thing that would have to happen is that Petunia Dursley dies. Something small, some tiny problem that Vernon dismissed as a "woman's issue" until one morning she didn't wake up and he turned to snap at her for letting him oversleep, only to find her looking too pale and feeling cold. She's rushed to the hospital and dead within the hour.

Vernon waits until a week after the funeral to pack Harry off to an orphanage. Just long enough to say he tried and then blame it on the 4 year old. Harry is sent away and Vernon starts shopping for a new wife to raise his son a few months later.

Remus would probably only learn of this when he's job hunting in the same area as the orphanage. Seeing a tiny version of James shuffling around, looking lost and friendless. He might look in to things, probably motivated by a certain amount of guilt that he hadn't learned, hadn't even looked in to, what had happened to Harry. Had assumed Harry was somewhere safe and loved and better off.

He thinks about the gold James had left him in his will, the stuff he hadn't wanted to touch out of grief and guilt. The gold he'd had to dip in to anyways when he'd been hard up for work and needed to make ends up. How was it possible that Remus had more to his name because of James than James' own son did?

Some transfigured papers, a mild confundus charm, and Remus is walking out of the orphanage with Harry's hand in his and half a plan to ask his father Lyall to babysit.

This is a Harry that grows up with more love in his life, certainly. But it is also a Harry who grows up with a lot more secrets. Lyall Lupin taught Remus fear and shame and the importance of hiding, and he and Remus both passed those lessons on to Harry regardless of if they meant to.

Harry grows up knowing his parents names and faces and about magic, but he also knows that keeping a secret is the difference between life and death some days. He loves and trusts Remus and Lyall, but he also will prefer to handle things himself so he doesn't have to bother either of them. If one of them gets called to his school because of an incident, Harry is apologetic and feels internalized shame that he disrupted their day so much. When Harry gets the key to his vault at 11, his first instinct is that he should use some of it to try and cover bills and repairs on the cottage he lives in with Remus.

This is a Harry who still only gets his first broom ride at Hogwarts, because Remus wasn't around enough during the war to learn about Harry's first little toy broom and the destroyed vase Lily hated anyways. This is a Harry who pauses more before he acts and gets caught in his own thoughts more. In this world Hermione suffers several broken bones because it took longer for Harry to find the bravery to stand up to Ron dismissing the potential danger of the troll situation. In this world Harry never went for the duel against Malfoy, and only discovered the secret of the third floor corridor when he was exploring the school under the cloak some time in the winter months.

This is a world where Harry goes home for holidays, does his homework carefully, and doesn't want to bring attention to himself.

This is also a world where Harry asks Remus during the Easter Break if magical rats are supposed to live for over a decade.
