Breeding is not an excuse for tiny enclosures
If you are breeding animals and you cannot provide them with complete care from day 1 then you should not be breeding animals.
Saying "I breed them, and there isnt enough space for climbing opportunities and all the snakes" then you should have less snakes.
Quality of care over quantity.
An animal does not deserve less because of your selfish desire to make more of them.
And no, enrichment isnt necessary for survival. Climbing isnt necessary for survival. But your animal is not thriving if you are not providing enough space to offer multiple options for natural behaviors and microclimates.
There are no excuses for minimalistic keeping! It only benefits the keeper, not the animal!!!!
I went to a talk tonight by a very successful monitor breeder- successful in that he’s a pioneer in getting several species to breed in captivity. He keeps his breeders in cages the size of a bathroom. Water tanks upwards of 300 gallons for his Merten’s monitor trios. His grow out cages are big, too. Every single animal has the ability to practice their natural behaviours, and his clutches are huge. The babies hatch out and typically thrive- he doesn’t lose many at all. His animals are beautiful and he’s well respected within the monitor community for his work- which he attributes to his husbandry. Breeding and good husbandry really can- and should!- go hand in hand!
Do you have a link to his website or social media
Yeah! He’s pretty Bad at Internet- he had like, a homemade geocities-type website until his host closed- but his kids are helping him put together a new one. He does post on FB though- his name is Mike Stefani and his business name is Mike’s Monitors. https://facebook.com/MikesMonitors/
I’m not always impressed by breeders. I’ve met a few monitor breeders and I’ve been very underwhelmed- sometimes even quite angry- at the way they set their animals up and the way they talk to people. But this talk was super informative and I felt really good about the way he keeps his varanids.
This is an example of the type of caging he uses!
