I kind of wish that the polarities of violence and sex in popular culture were reversed. Like, I wish that writers and filmmakers needed to justify up the wazoo their decisions to show a murder on screen when "they could have just done it tastefully in shadow or something," but no one even batted an eye at a sex scene. I kind of wish that erotic video games were the norm but FPSs were a considered a weird and loser-ish thing to play.
I mean, I really wish that you didn't have to justify either, but it bugs me that, of the two, killing is the one that you can use in wholesome family friendly entertainment but fucking is the one that you forever need to shield your children from even knowing about.
I don't think that this difference is innocent, either. Like, I think that sexual repression is a good means of control whereas the state always needs an army of young men who are willing to kill people.
listen. I understand if you dont want to see sex in a movie. But im begging you to think about how the prevalence of murder and acts of harm being portrayed in media vs. the censorship and hush-hush nature behind sex affects our relationships with it.
think about what this post is saying about the normalization of violence and demonization of eroticism. How sexual repression and the indulgence of violence lets a society be guided in a certain direction.
If you dont want to see a sex scene in a movie, thats fine. But this isnt about personal preferences. This is about how culture is shaped by what we choose to show. For the love of god.
I am a horror movie fan who loves gore and violence and murder, you know, a sicko, and I also think it is extremely weird and unsettling that violence is so much more accepted in media than sex. Compare the kind of violent content you can put in a PG-13 movie with the kind of sexual content allowed. It's fucked up!
Obviously I don't want anyone taking away my horror movies and replacing them with softcore porn or anything, that's not the point. Just... maybe we should be less worried about kids seeing a depiction of consensual sex and more worried about stuff like, idk, being taught that incredibly bloody revenge is a normal way to respond to being harmed, or that the right way to handle criminals is to explode them, or some of the things I think might do more lasting harm than the simple fact of violent imagery.
There was an episode of Deep Space Nine. Back in the... late 90s? I think? That featured a lesbian kiss. This being two or three decades ago now, they received many letters of complaint, a number of them claiming it meant the show was no longer Family-Friendly.
One of the writers responded to one of those letter, asking if it would have been more appropriate for the women to shoot each other with a phaser. He was answered in the affirmative, and his response was that if the person felt it was better for his children to see an act of violence than an act of affection, he might want to reconsider his definition of family-friendly.

I know Pluribus is going to enter the annals of television because it's a rare current example of trusting your audience and not treating them with 'kid gloves' with metaphors boiled down to a mush for easy consumption. It's about colonialism it's about generative ai and addiction to convenience, it's about cults it's about queerness and assimilation, it's about consumerism it's about communication, the many barriers that exist to it and the irreplacable joy of connection between individuals, precious for its flaws and existing despite everything stacked against it.
Like I think no matter where the show goes from here, I'll probably be in a situation where I'm among annoying people or having a shit miscommunication time with them, and I'll remember this show and feel a smidge of gratefulness for the fact that I get to live in this frictioned imperfect world of assholes where anything can happen.
I'm not kidding that I UGLY sobbed during the Manousos travel sequence. I have never seen a more beautiful representation of the desire for human connection. The shot of the rock with the drawings done of early humans and animals representing one of the first modes of externalizing thoughts and sharing ideas before written language was developed... Manousos going to painstaking lengths to learn English so that he can communicate with Carol in her tongue when they finally meet... The breathtaking scenery around him that he cannot even fully appreciate because he has no one to share it with...
The hivemind has already seen the whole world and can't experience awe. They don't have to work to learn a language, which is an act of tremendous love and respect when shared between humans. In gaining all of the knowledge of every brain on the planet, they lost all sense of empathy and determination and spirit, which Manousos embodies at every turn.
The thing about the Hive is that I don't think it's hiding any sinister intentions - I think that its "good" intentions ARE its sinister intentions. The Hive has taken the "good" intention of never killing and made it so cartoonishly literal and shallow that it has lost any legitimacy as a truly moral imperative. Like, a definition of killing that includes picking apples is not morally coherent. Their "thou shalt not kill" ethos is leading to mass death, but who really gives a shit about people dying? Not the Hive! The important thing is that everyone agrees that killing is wrong and that everyone avoids doing the wrong thing. If that indirectly leads to a lot of people dying - oh well. 🤷♀️ Isn't the breaking of a few billion eggs worth it to have such a beautiful and moral Consensus? It's true that people will starve, but they'll do it with a smile on their face! Isn't an existence without conflict so wonderful, so correct?
The only thing that the Hive finds genuinely distressing is the existence of voices outside of the beautifully perfect Consensus. The fact that Carol disagrees with their premise is so highly distressful that the Hive starts self-destructing whenever she gets too forceful about it. The Hive can pretty easily bear the cost of mass death, but what it can't bear at ALL is criticism. The Hive thinks it solved the trolley problem when it's actually just refusing to engage in any meaningful way in issues of ethics and reframing its refusal as evidence of its inherent goodness. Because conflict = evil, therefore avoidance of conflict = good

i just watched “tragedy girls” for the first time and i gotta say, i really dig how mckayla and sadie aren’t woobified at all. no Tragic Backstory™️, no remorse for their actions, no motive that makes their actions seem less reprehensible, no shitty childhood, no inner conflict about the fact that they’re murderers… they’re just awful, awful people.
the narrative is just like, “yep, these two are irredeemable. love them anyway.” and you do.
Tragedy Girls is so good because its so unapologetic. These two teenage girls are just serial killers. They don't have any cop-outs, there aren't any supernatural forces at play, there's nothing to blame their behavior on, they are just horrible narcissists who love killing people. It shows you in gruesome detail the protagonists doing evil things. The movie itself is unafraid to be evil. It's not cautious, It doesn't go halfway there, it doesn't leave out certain details, it doesn't make the girls sympathize-able, it doesn't make excuses like so many other movies in this genre often do for their killer-protagonists. But despite all of that you will love these girls all the way through because of how the story is so beautifully framed around them. They got away with it, they're living their dream, they love each other above everyone else. Its the perfect example of finding beauty in the ugliest of things.
Did Judy's death make sense for the theme of the show? Yes. Did Judy's death make sense for Judy's story arc? No.
And that's where my opinions always differ from TV writers. They think characters exist to serve the plot and theme of the show. I think the plot of a show should serve the characters personal journeys.
When both show and characters develop in perfect harmony and what makes sense for the show makes sense for the characters, it's perfect. It's also really damn rare. More often than not those two end up drifting somewhere along the way and you have to end up making the decision on what to put first. And writers have a damn tendency to ALWAYS put plot and story first rather than character.
That's where they always fail.
