Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2024 event, running from November 1st, 2024 through November 30th, 2024. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.
Create your character. Choose name, appearance, and other markers of identity. Write it down in journal.
Spread five points across three stats - Aesthetics, Charisma, and Intelligence
Aesthetics refers to how attractive a character is
Charisma refers to how persuasive they are
Intelligence refers to the ability to know and apply knowledge
Create three potential love interests - the serious student (intelligence), the campus charmer (charisma), and the model (aesthetics). Describe appearance, interests, etc
Interact with each love interests for three rounds. You may choose one of these actions to take
After three rounds, the love interest with the most successful interactions is the one you will date. Write a journal entry describing a date. At the end, roll 1d6.
4-6: it's true love - together forever.
1-3: it was horrible - we'll never talk to each other again.

For 2+ players, more is better. Requires pen and paper.
One player is designated the Catsitter. The other players are Unruly Cats.
Before the game starts, the Catsitter writes down one Catsitting Strategy and one Helpful Item per Unruly Cat present on a flashcard and keeps all their flashcards face down.
The catsitter has three Sanity for every cat, as well as six Attention. Every cat has five Energy. Start the game with the player to the left of the catsitter and go clockwise afterwards.
On their turn, a cat can:
Take A Nap and do nothing.
Be Cute And Distracting. Reduce the catsitter's Attention by one, or help another cat's Shenanigans so the catsitter needs one more flashcard.
Engage In Shenanigans. Describe your kitty crimes. If the catsitter has at least one Attention, they can reveal a relevant, face-down flashcard and stop you, otherwise reduce their Sanity by one.
All actions except naps cost one Energy.
On the catsitter's turn, they can:
Drink Coffee. Exchange one Sanity for three Attention.
Watch Intently. Reduce Attention by one and reduce items needed to stop the next Shenanigans by one.
Chill Out and do nothing.
The game ends if the catsitter loses all their Sanity, or all cats are out of Energy.
OK to be archived.
This is my first time writing anything like this, and it's probably not particularly original, but I had cats on the brain and this looked like a fun exercise. I didn't run the numbers to see if this results in a somewhat fair chance for both parties so the exact numbers might need to be changed to result in a fun game.
Without title and italic description it's exactly 200 words.
Over the Mountain is a solo rural fantasy journaling game on one page. Your character lives in a small mountain town and records their journey to carry out their Calling as they get to know the local human and spirit Neighbors, find bizarre items to collect, and clear the strange Dungeons found throughout. Will your curious character stick with their mission long enough to fill an entire journal? What Achievements might they unlock?
Over the Mountain has players roll dice to generate prompts they must include as they record their daily encounters. It's flexible and leaves a lot up to the player so that it can be replayed again and again, generating a new town each time. If a rule isn't clear or isn't explicitly stated, it is up to the player to decide what best fits the story or is just the most fun.
A small sample of the coming Mortasheen Tabletop RPG Book
At the link above is a 45 page condensed PDF sample of the upcoming 300+ page Mortasheen TTRPG Core Rulebook. This condensed sample contains just the following:
-The Biotypes (player races)
-The College of Genetics location and its Dean
-The Runoff, a sample adventure locale in Mortasheen City
-An explanation of the "Green Goo" that Mortasheen runs on
-24 monster pages, some of them still never before seen by anyone but the original Kickstarter backers, from a planned final count of 152 monsters.
No gameplay instructions, but monster pages retain their statblocks for you to look at.
All full color artwork in this sample is by myself or by @revretch, while pixel sprites are by hashtag_underscore, beachboogyman, myself, and Pokemon: Quarantine Crystal's @latenightagain !
Any money from this zine-sized digital preview will go partially into everyday survival and partially into improving the print quality of the final book. Its kickstarter print budget is still with me, but only covers a just-average quality for the book's first run! There are still better paper weights and color options to consider! After that print run finishes and ships out to all 2020 backers, that final book will go up for public purchase, maybe by the end of this year (2024) if everything works out.
Boost and spread this if you can; I've worked on Mortasheen as a personal world building project for over twenty years, and the coming RPG release is a project that took multiple people at least fifteen years.
FIND OUT WHAT KIND OF MONSTER IS CALLED "SHARKITECT"
20 days left until release everyone! Im currently doing some last-minute work to have the game release as polished as possible.
I haven't got much left to show (at least without spoiling) So ill just invite people to keep sharing the game and anything relating to it in these last few weeks.
This game has been the last year and a half of my life, and I am very, very proud of it. You can go and grab it on my itch.io page, for $5 USD! A steal for a full 40 page rulebook, including character sheets and playing board.
Hopefully ya'll like it as much as I loved working on it!
You know what? I think I'm gonna spend this weekend making my 200-word TTRPG games into docs to be available on the Mushroom Witch Games Itch dot io store. Stay tuned.
Both items will be Download Free/Pay what you like.
CATS KNOW THINGS is finally available on our Itch.io store! YAY!!!
There are also Ten community copies for download for those from marginalized communities and/or those who cannot afford a copy (no questions asked!). At the beginning of the month, more community copies will be added for every purchase.
We really hope you enjoy playing CATS KNOW THINGS - may all the rumors the cat tells you be scandalous and salacious!
