Day 30
For pride I'm posting my favorite lines in BLs, one each day.
happy gay blade renaissance
Need someone to sound the alarm that Journey With You has a happy ending so all the people who were hesitant to watch, will watch it.
There are misunderstandings and miscommunications that I don't mind and then there are ones that are not just dragged out over multiple episodes but also include just every trauma imaginable and make everyone miserable and could be solved with the most basic conversation and just... man, I don't need another episode of Miserable Boys with Trauma Refuse to Be Cute Together Because Misery in a show that literally includes that one of them will die in the summary so like get on with the fucking romance. If you are gonna kill this man and leave his partner alone then I need more of them being happy together and less of this absolute misery.
Dear god, I realize now that I did not fully comprehend what the summary said when I started this show. I’m already stressed out with Zhan Wang’s secret terminal brain cancer in Lost to You, and Pei Yanzhi still dealing with being poisoned in Journey with You.
Though I still have hope because GagaOOLala did tag Lost To You as fantasy, so I am holding space for a miracle that gives me the happy ending I want. I’m also holding out hope that the poison is one of those where if you stop taking antidote it won’t kill you, but it will hurt a lot for a little bit.
But I don’t know if I can take this. I really like Xiao-He and Junjia together. I haven’t watched the full episode 6 yet, so I think I’m gonna quit while I’m ahead.

Humans are good sometimes actually
“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
I love Gideon the Ninth because you open with Harrow and Gideon going into Canaan House terrified of having their Big Con pretending to be a normal necromancer and cavalier primary, right? Classic stuff, high tension, lovely. But by the end of the book you realize like half the group is doing this.
Cam and Palamedes have gone about this all the wrong way, they're probably only there to meet Dulcie frankly. Cam sticks out like a sore thumb because she's a damn good fighter but has never learned a fencing rule in her life and also they might be up for some light treason while they're flaunting the natural order of their binary gender roles. Then of course the Tridentarii and their pet Babs are there with an even BIGGER secret with HIGHER stakes and honestly they're doing a shit job at covering it up. But no one catches on bc they're too busy gawking Abigail and Magnus who aren't young anymore and can't be bothered to hide their taboo, rules breaking heresy.
Then there's Dulcinea—who, as you may recall,
Wow, watching the first episode of Crazy Love Moo Moo and this is definitely the first time in a thai BL, that the character looking for love wanted someone with a deeper skin tone. Which is actually nice to hear, even if the main romance won't actually be with someone with a deeper skin tone.
The common trope in Thai BLs (I think I've heard it in some Korean ones to, but so much more in the Thai ones) of wanting someone pale and white has always stuck out to me (because I am a Black American with darker skin, so it is something that I am sensitive to) so hearing the opposite is nice for once.
“I have no better way.. To ensure your safety and freedom. If I fail, then it’s fate.” “Then what about me?”

The translator note of “This shit is blurry as hell, I can’t read it!” on episode 3 of Smile After Tears has me crying laughing, I have to calm down so I can finish the episode.
But I prefer that to just not translating, which I noticed they do on IQIYI sometimes.
