Chapter 1: A Ghostbusterâs Dilemma
Egon hooks up with an old colleague from University and is now faced with a dilemma that has the potential to entirely change his life.
This was never meant to happen. It was certainly not supposed to happen to Egon of all people.. yet here he was. For once in his life, he didnât take any precautions. He had let loose, and he sure as hell wouldnât do something like this ever again. He had to make sure that it wouldnât.
She was beautiful, a good colleague back from Columbia, a professor of physics, Carmela Sanchez. Nothing serious had ever happened between the two; it was just a mutual feeling of attraction. Being a full-time Ghostbuster now, he no longer worked at the university; he would, however, borrow lab equipment from former colleagues and converse with his professor buddies. This time, he was helping his old roommate with an experiment- molecular cloning, when she just so happened to be there. They chatted for a while, he nervously invited her out for coffee-his treat. She had invited him back to her place, and for once in his life, Egon had decided, âfuck it.â And just went with it without aÂ
second thought. It was kind of.. Fun to not analyze a situation for once, to just be void of thoughts for a little while, and so he dived into a night of cheap liquor and feelings of euphoria, and it was glorious.
But he had forgotten that every scientific experiment comes to a conclusion, of which he was stupid enough not to make a prediction about.
âWow! Congratulations, Spengs! I was starting to worry you were still a virgin!- OW! Jeanine!â
Egon shot Peter an unamused expression from where he was sitting across the kitchen table. He had decided to tell his companions what had happened, at first deciding against it, but seeing as it was something he couldnât keep hidden, he had chosen to just come out with it, though Peter was already making him regret his decision.
Winston handed Egon a cup of Coffee, two creams, three sugars, and a bit of cinnamonâjust as he liked it.Â
âWhat are you going to do, Egon?â
Winston was pretty new; he had joined just a couple of months ago and had helped with their marshmallow-ghost-possessed disaster. He grew quite fond of the man; they all did. Between Egonâs seriousness, Peterâs nonchalant demeanor, and Rayâs âhappy-go-lucky attitudeâ, he was a perfect combination of all three, sort of like the glue that held them all together.
Egon took a large gulp of his coffee and sighed, âWell, we both spoke to each other about it. Carmela has no intentions of keeping the ⌠uh ⌠baby; however, she doesnât feel quite comfortable ending her pregnancy. Sheâs thinking about adoption.â
âAnd what do you think about it?â Jeanine chimed in.
âWhat?! But Egon, you canât! That's the newest member of The Ghostbusters youâre giving away! Come on! Peter, Winston, and I could be uncles! And you! You would be an amazing dad!â
âDefine âamazing dad-â OW! Jeanine!âÂ
âLook, Ray, I appreciate your concern, but my only priority right now is my work, that and supporting Carmella. If she wants to give the baby up for adoption, then thatâs what weâre going to do.â
Jeanine looked up at Egon with a serious look. She knew him. Although he seemed calm and sure of his decision, she knew on the inside his mind was on a seesaw.Â
âEgon, are you sure? This is a tough decision, itâs okay if youâre not sure yet, you have time-âÂ
âIâm positive, Jeanine, besidesâŚâ Egon began to think about his parents. They were like a sea of ice. Emotionally distant, unavailable. They had done their job of parenting, even though love was never in the description manuel. âSpenglers donât do well with children.â
Eight months had passed, and to Carmellaâs relief, Egon had been there through it all, going on wellness checks with her and often checking in with her, giving her supplies when needed. It was rare she didnât think most men in Egonâs situation would be willing to do half of what he has done for her, especially in an awkward situation like this where they werenât in a relationship, but she was grateful nonetheless, she always knew that Egon was a man who was wise beyond his years, and although he wasnât as attuned with dealing with emotions, he had made it very clear that he was there for her, getting her whatever she needed, and fully understanding her perspective. Egon Spengler was a saint.
âOkay, okay, Carmella, you're about ten centimeters dilated now, I need you to breathe and start pushing, okay?â
â*AGHHHH.* WHY DON'T YOU start pushing YOU SON OF A *AGH* BITCHHHHHâ
Egon tried not to wince as Carmella squeezed his hand again. His knuckles were red, and his hands were almost bruised; he was beginning to regret allowing her to squeeze them. Carmella had allowed Egon to be with her in the room and give his full support while she delivered the baby. Carmella had begun her active phase of laborâŚ. Eight hours ago. Egon was sure he had heard every curse word to ever exist spew out of her, and at this rate, he was worried his hand was a goner. Â
âHey, Carmella, just try to relax, remember the breathing â
âHey Egon, respectfully, HOW ABOUT YOU SHUT THE F*CK UP, OKAY?!â
âYouâre lucky that's the pain talking, or else I would perceive this differently.â
Finally, with one last push, a piercing wail filled the room. Everything was like a blur; the nurses came and took the baby away quickly to clean her up.
âYou did it, Carmella!â Egon said as he smiled at the overexerted woman. âitâs over, you did a good job.âCarmella smiled faintly as she gave Egonâs hand a grateful squeeze.Â
âThank you, Egon⌠for everything. I really couldnât have done any of this without you.
âWell, what are colleagues/hookups for?â
âNever say that again.â
âNope, I wasnât planning on it. That didnât feel right coming out.â Egon watched from a distance as the nurses cleaned the squirming baby girl. He knew right away that that had been a mistake because as soon as he did, he wasnât able to look away. Before he knew it, his legs were moving towards the cleaning station, and he watched intently as they wrapped her all up in a blanket. He refused to come any closer, afraid his mere presence would mess something up, yet he still yearned to stay.
âMr. Spengler, would you like to hold her?â Without even thinking, Egon responded quickly in a very non-Egon way.
âYes,â the nurse beckoned him over to a chair and demonstrated how to hold the baby before settling it into his slightly trembling hands.Â
She had warm honey colored skin with freckles sprinkled all over, dark brown locs that curled around her face (a telltale sign that she was a Spengler), and a tiny button nose. He could not stop analyzing every inch of her face. She was the best subject he had ever observed- far better than spores and fungi. He had felt the connection deep in his bones as soon as he caught his first glimpse of her. It was weird to feel this way about someone who had only been alive for a few minutes. The sudden feeling of protection he had was overwhelming. That was when he realized he just couldnât. This was his daughter
âCarmellaâ, but before Egon could say anything, Carmella gave Egon a knowing smile, almost like she assumed this would happen.
âI know Egon⌠Itâs okay.â
âBut we agreed on-â Carmella reached forward and gently squeezed his wrist,Â
âItâs okay Egon. I understand. You are going to be a great father.â A lump formed in Egonâs throat. He carefully swallowed and gave a nod towards Carmella as if to say, âthank you. Thank you for this absolute giftâ. The only thought in his mind now was how on earth would he install a baby carseat in the back of Ecto-1?
