This post bothers me. I couldn’t figure out exactly why since I agree with its sentiment. However, I will try without writing an entire essay.
We’re all in this together.
I most agree with the last poster in this chain. Our destruction of the environment is truly caused by wealth and capital (see: totalitarian agriculture). I believe we, human, can become separate from these socially constructed economic systems. However, we created them. And, we are apart of our environment.
The argument above is contingent on dividing human ‘culture’ and the environment ‘nature’. This dualism is destructive (all dualism is absurd, but that’s another rant). The argument ‘our species destroyed the environment’ isn’t the case. Our practices have.
We create and reaffirm a system of wealth and capital systematically. Yes, the destruction on our environment is driven by only a few percentage of us. Yes, the idea of a collective guilt upon the rest of us exists (it’s OUR responsibility). Yet, as fellow humans, what practice do we partake in? Consumerism.
We, the rest of us, are apart of this cycle as much as they (big corporations) are. Although I agree collective guilt exists, rather than “[justifying] not putting any effort in saving people from the deadly consequences of climate change” I think this simply justifies feeling the feeling our actions will have little impact that makes many not want to put in the effort.
But, we are putting in effort! And we can!
As consumers of wealthy nations, we have so much impact. We can change our buying habits to promote environmentally friendly brands. Heck, buying real organic produce (not owned by big agra) is better not just for the consumer, but the thousands of migrant farmworkers whose bodies we exploit to pick our produce for us in pesticide ridden fields. We are privileged that as consumers of wealth we create demand. Companies follow demand. It’s a sink.
We can also hold those in power accountable. In democratic nations, we can vote for those who DO believe in ‘saving our environment.’ Because it isn’t just for us.
It’s a part of those millions of people whose lives we endanger. And the animals we rely on to survive. And the nature we rely on to survive. (Trees are beautiful, surprisingly give us oxygen, and reduce flooding GASP). Why can’t we do both at the same time?
Because of dualism. We teach humans are separate from the environment. Sure, we shouldn’t feel guilt or blame. But, we shouldn’t push the blame to those whose faults it is. Doing that puts us at fault too.
I think we should care, and perhaps admit our species put our environment through a loop. Doesn’t mean we can’t turn that negativity into some positivity.
No one deserves a destroyed environment. Not everyone partakes in these practices either. Our environment was never pristine. However, saying our species destroyed the environment is including the billions of humans who lives we endanger, because they are apart of the environment. We are participating in wealth and capital as a species.
tl;dr: we’re the same as animals, the same as a blade of grass we eat and put back into our environment. we can do better for ALL OF US. not just the ~cute animals~ but our fellow humans, who are also ~cute animals~
