Some days Ash really felt he just couldn’t do it. Couldn’t put on the show, force a smile and act like he was fine and not dying a slow death on the inside. And today was definitely shaping up to be one of those days. Ash had always envied people who knew who they were and had their proverbial shit together. The truth of the matter was, he’d been ruined from the day he and his father had first stepped foot in this god forsaken town. His father had taken him to a therapist within the first week of their arrival due to Ash’s mental state and his ever worsening depression and anxiety. The therapist had diagnosed him with ptsd, explaining that trauma no matter how small it seemed was still trauma. It had felt good to be validated for once. See? He’d thought with a glare in his father’s direction. This is what you and mom did to me.

Today was turning out to be one of those days. Where he just couldn’t function. He’d scrawled out the word ‘fuck’ across his knuckles with permanent marker earlier that morning. Self expression, he figured. He glanced down at the smudged ink on his knuckles, tracing a finger over the smudged ink on letter F. “I just don’t get people. I don’t. I just don’t know how to just…exist. Among people. It’s like everyone is in on some big secret and I’m the last one to know. I just feel like I must be really fucked up and I’m on a completely different wave length from everyone else” he sighed, glancing up at the person sitting across from him at the Double Shot Cafe.

makena would be dubbed a liar if she said people didn’t interest her, what makes them tick and whatnot. people watching is a hoot when you’ve got nothing better to do, and even better when you’re high, which is exactly how she ended up in the cafe after a quick smoke session by the dumpsters outside. she felt his energy as soon as he walked in the joint and jesus was he packing some heavy shit. pink-tinted green hues latched onto him like a vulture would with a carcass. but, like, in a subtle way. maybe. “ you sound verrry otherworldly right now. ” she drawls out as if trying to come to some sort of conclusion with her quick assessment of him, while answering him. “ like ... not from this planet. are you a people ? or something else. either way, dude, i dunno if you really wanna be talking to me about all that right now. like, my only advice to give is to tell everyone to fuck off. and if it’s with your fist, ” she pointedly looks down at his ink covered fingers, “ then that’s cool too. just don’t tell anyone i gave you the go-ahead, okay ? i don’t wanna be linked to your punching spree. ”

with absolutely no excessive care or attention to detail, jasper had emptied out a bottle of ketchup leading into one of the bathrooms just off the food court during his break, mostly because he’s bored. he’d even take the time to step in it and make a couple footprints that look completely fake and hilarious, and might trick someone for a second or two, which is what he’s aiming for. after cleaning his shoe off he stops someone else in the food court and points out the trail of fake blood (ketchup) over by the bathrooms. “oh my god, someone totally got murdered again,” he says with no real emphasis and pops the bright blue bubblegum he’s chewing. “i hope it was that old dude who always comes into my store and tells me he hates my nose ring. some people deserve to go, know what i mean?”

remnants of a cherry slushee slosh around at the bottom of her cup as makena saunters across the food court, her lunch break nearly spent. lost in her own world, she would have glided right by jasper, had he not snagged her attention with the display of some sort of red substance splattered on the floor toward the bathrooms. for a split second, her heart jolts. whether it’s out of fear or excitement though, she doesn’t really have time to decipher the feeling until realization dawns on her. “ oh my god, no way. look at all the ... blood. ” glossed lips press firmly around the tip of her straw, crushing the flimsy plastic as a chuckle threatened to break character, while her hand vapidly gestures toward the staged crime scene. “ who could it be ? the butcher .. the baker ? the candlestick maker ? ” free hand rises to settle over her chest, oozing with faux sympathy, until jasper’s final comment ends the scene and she’s quickly sporting a small smirk. “ well, if it was him, at least now we’d know who did it; karma. ”
