What doesn’t get talked about enough is that, all those 40-something years, Rocky had all the supplies he needed to go back home. He had the fuel, he had the food. But he didn’t. He tried and tried and tried. He kept going. He took measurements, gathered data, built new Astrophage samplers but could never get it right. He maintained the Blip-A, a ship that was built in a hurry and just kept breaking, for over FORTY YEARS. When Grace found him, Rocky wasn’t just sitting idle in orbit. He was still working, still trying, he hadn’t given up. He was tracking the stars, probably to watch for a potential second mission from Erid, when he spotted the Hail Mary in reverse-thrust. Rocky calls Grace brave. Truly, Grace is. But I’d compare Rocky more to Stratt. How much of yourself would you be willing to sacrifice to save your planet? Rocky was willing to stay at Tau Ceti for the rest of his life until he either found a solution, or died.

rocky, who has trauma around not being able to save his crew mates and find a solution to the astrophage problem on his own for decades, finding in grace someone he is able to save and someone who provides him with answers to his crew mates deaths and the solution to the astrophage problem & grace, who has trauma around being betrayed on earth and forced onto the mission because he seemingly did not have anyone he would die for, finding in rocky someone he is willing to give up his life and the chance of getting back home for. them being exactly what they needed to start moving on from their respective traumas

reallyfirm believer in grace being a horrendous sensory experience for eridians as a whole. the misophonia alien. the overstimulation alien. like if worms were bigger and wetter and were more bad to see. all of which is, of course, to facilitate rockys literal alienation ala the metamorphosis but like in the opposite way (hard-shelled bug vs worm) AND i know ive been on this bullshit for months iam still not over it!! socially alienate that guy!!!!! what if you found more comfort and familiarity in an alien rather than your own species. what if everybody could kind of tell. everybody respects rocky & he does have a good amount of political sway but theres a lot of concerned side eye going on behind the scenes & people keep floating by the idea that maybe some separation would do them good. rocky gets baker acted

sowwy. always facing rocky with the choice between reintegrating into eridian society or living with grace. and the only real choice is grace. because even if they werent toxically codependent, grace remains the one person capable of understanding half of what rocky went through. and its like. nobody on erid is being malicious. they just dont get it. they cant get it. and honestly not even grace can Fully get it. but hes the closest, and he has no frame of reference for what eridians "should" be like so he's not pushing for rockys return-to-form. he just wants his buddy.
