I keep seeing people talking about how Steven finally meets his Mom and how great it is. No. You’re missing the point. He does not meet his Mom. His mother is gone. It’s always just been him. He has been SO SCARED that he was only half a person, that he needed to be his Mother, and that every time he felt self respect, it was someone else feeling it. Finally , FINALLY, he knows that he is only himself. He can have self love and self esteem, and that is so very important. Hence the ending song. Saying that the gem Steven was his mother obliterates all of that character development.
