Their argument seems to be that Corlys loved those boys so he wouldn't say any if that, but the thing is, its more complicated then that.
I never was comfortable with the idea that Corlys was fine with kids he knew weren't of Velayron blood inheriting Driftmark, because he of all people, built the house up to be what it is and he understands the importance of family lines. But I was willing to beleive that he did, during peace times, hold affection for the boys.
He can accept it wasnt their faults their mother brought them into the world in this way, and can actually care about them as kids. But as they get older, as it gets worse. He is incapacitated during what happens to Vaemond, and he still should remember what they did to his brother over the bastard thing. He would remember Rhaenyra and Daemon killed his son so they could marry, when the union between Rhaenyra and Laenor, while not ideal for the Targaryens, was a very politically important alliance for the Velayrons. And then the pushing her bastards as heirs to Driftmark on top of all,of that. All of that before the war starts.
Then many people die. His wife dies. High Tide, which he built is destroyed. His fleet which he built, is destroyed. All he has left are the bastard sons he neglected. And despite that negelct, they proved themselves and he is trying to right his wrongs. Is it too little too late? Maybe. But he watched his family all die around him, and his entire legacy burned to the ground.
I think all of this is perfect for Corlys to start questioning what he ever was doing supporting the Strong boys in the first place. He maybe did care about them, and still might but thats irrelevant now.
And Rhaenyra fans wrongly think that Corlys pushing Rhaenyra on the bastard issue, is him insulting the boys, when its not.
Calling them bastards was never an insult, only the truth. And Corlys was simply pushed to the edge enough to finally confront that.
