"In ten years we'll be together, laughing and sipping tea." - The One To Revolutionize The World
The Marie Kim arc truly, painfully, agonizingly, depicts incestuous abuse. I feel like most people associate only sexual abuse with incest (which is horrible in its own right) but fail to understand the true scope of incestuous abuse. It's something that claims family is uniquely sacred & untouchable. Anything that your family does is exempt from criticism because they're family. Blood ties may as well be devotion.
And we can see the impact of incestuous grooming on Marie, how she cleans and cooks for her father and older brother:
And when she talks about leaving her caretaker role, her brother stamps her down under the pretext of family. "What are me and dad supposed to do if you move" and "why are you deciding that on your own?" implies that Marie's own autonomy doesn't matter, because she is inextricably tied by blood.
The father's enabling is a huge factor. He covers up the abuse by saying "nothing happened." This, again, is another aspect of incestuous abuse. In order for him to keep up the guise of a "normal family", he ignores and hides all abnormalities. Because family is sacred and perfect. And anything behind the scenes that indicates otherwise is an affront to the familial structure.
"I told you not to lock the door when you have family at home" FAMILY! See? His words and tone translate to "you cannot separate yourself from us because you're a family member". We're related, so we have to be close to each other. It doesn't matter if you try to be yourself. Because in the end, family matters more than anything.
