Part Five Of I Reread Moon Rising: Many Attempted Murders, No Actual Murder, And The End!
Last one of these posts for Moon Rising!
Icicle knows that the bomb in the history cave was meant for her. How does she know that? Are assassination attempts regular for her? Does she just know that she's behaved in such a way that she is the most likely target for a murder attempt (I mean, considering the number of times I have questioned what her problem is, she wouldn't be wrong, but still).
Poor Umber--he really doesn't want to leave, but he has to go with Sora. The way his farewell with Qibli and Moon goes is so sad.
Also, what's really interesting is that Sora isn't sorry. Well, she's horribly sorry about the collateral damage (although she still justifies it interestingly enough), and she's sorry about making trouble for Clay and Umber, but she's not sorry about her attempts on Icicle's life. She's read up on IceWing physiognomy and she checked that so that she can be completely sure that she's right about Icicle being the one to kill Crane, and she considers it self-defence due to Icicle's evening conversations with Scarlet.
I love that Moon and Qibli assume 'okay, Sora is safely gone, but Icicle also promised to kill the dragonets of destiny and I think she's probably immediately pivoted to doing that', and I think it's a good thing that they were right. I can only assume Icicle checked, like, three places, decided 'hmm, Sora's too hard to find, better go kill a librarian.'
speaking of which, I'm still thinking about the fact that Fatespeaker wasn't there. She's so protective over Starflight, and she's generally joined to him at the hip, but one of the few times she's not there, he's attacked. She'd have felt so guilty.
also I can't help thinking that Qibli perhaps chose his words wrongly when warning Starflight. If he'd just called 'duck!' or something, who knows--that might have been an unambiguous enough instruction that Starflight could have reacted in time. The problem with 'look out' is that it kind of largely depends on the person's ability to, you know, look out.
I love Starflight saying 'Icicle, if you let me go now, you won't have done anything wrong', as though tackling and attempting to murder a school official is nothing wrong. I get why he says it, but it's a bit funny to me.
It's interesting that we get the 'This is why Winter hated NightWings' revelation, pointing towards the NightWings probably killing Hailstorm. The whole historic IceWing/NightWing conflict hasn't even factored in yet.
Also interesting--every time Icicle makes a claim or anything, Winter glances over at Moon to check. Winter doesn't know about the mind-reading thing yet--I guess either he figures her visions will let her know. Or, possibly--he's already watched her make deductions about what Bandit feels, call his bluff and behave in ways informed by his thoughts and emotional state--Winter may just think that Moon is just another Qibli, and is just really good at reading people.
'"Good pffft. Would you rather be good or strong" Icicle said. In response, Winter smashed his sister over the head with his tail'--solidly one of my favourite Winter moments. He chooses good! And also violence.
also Qibli is so concussed following the fight with Icicle--he's kind of stumbling around, punch-drunkenly talking about 'part two: the crushening, where I...you know...crush...things'. go to the infirmary and get an ice pack, Qibli!
Sunny is so sweet to Moon when they go to talk <3. I have not quite forgiven her for the 'Another Fatespeaker?' mental comment, but I'll let it slide for now.
I love when Moon is like 'well, I'm going to find Winter and talk to him. None of you have to come, because I would never ask you to fly into a rainstorm, especially not you, Qibli, because you have a concussion.' and Qibli and Kinkajou are like 'we're a team! of course we're coming!' and Turtle is like 'no, actually I will be not flying after Winter in a rainstorm' and Kinkajou says 'we're a team! yes you are coming, sir! also you love water'.
as a result, we are frequently reminded that Turtle is having a Bad Time. tbf, he's doing exercise in a rainstorm. I Too would be having a a bad time.
shout-out to Scarlet appearing in Peril's dream and just demanding 'WHO DIED?' and Peril's like 'wait what uhhhh no-one I don't Think?'
Also Scarlet feeling like firescales are wasted on Peril because Peril feels too guilty about using them. Which is funny, because that's the opposite of how literally everyone thinks about Peril.
Now, it seems like a bunch of people have been enjoying my reread reviwes, and I plan to continue them, but I'm wondering whether I should continue to do them in a series of posts like this one (like my thoughts on Moon Rising are spread across five posts), or if I should make one main post for each book and just add each part in the reblogs:
What do you like?
A separate new post for each 'part' of the review
One masterpost for each book with my updates in the reblogs
