actually i think the whole ada dorm situation is woefully underutilized. small dorm rooms, thin walls, an unkempt yard with a random car wreck in it like...
kenji using a corner of the yard to grow vegetables and offering everyone who walks past him into the dorm as he works on it some of his harvest.
even dazai who would rather subsist of canned food, cup noodles and sake exclusively, canât say no to him and has to reluctantly learn that eating a vegetable does cause less despair maybe.
atsushi, feeling bad for taking so many, reflexively offers to help, which kenji gladly accepts even though atsushi very obviously has no idea what heâs doing. but learning how to care for the plants and see them grow big and healthy has a therapeutic effect on atsushi, whose previous experience with farmwork was limited to unconsciously destroying the orphanageâs crops.
kyouka who insists on going along with atsushi feels similarly content to use her hands for nurturing rather than killing. though unlike atsushi who helps out wherever kenji asks him to, kyouka develops an attachment to a particular tomato plant, so kenji gives her the tools to care for it and lets it be her responsibility.
for lack of a shed (and storage space in the dorm rooms) a lot of the gardening tools end up in the car wreck. as does a secondhand grill that got passed on to them by a client.
the grill doesnât see much use, because on the rare occasion that someone feels the urge to grill, the smell attracts everyone else in the dorm and then they have to feed the entire company.
it does get dusted off and de-spidered at least once a year for an end of summer party though. itâs a mostly spontaneous we-happen-to-have-some-downtime-between-jobs affair with 50%-off fireworks and everyone contributing a little something (a side, a dessert, a questionably coloured pot of mystery stew... no points for guessing who brought that one. though trying the first bite is treated as a test of courage, it does usually taste pretty good. you never know what youâll get though and thatâs how they learn that kunikida has a pineapple allergy.) and fukuzawa buying some decent meat as well as alcohol and softdrinks.
as the time gets later and the participants drunker, the activities get stupider (yosano may be one of the most intoxicated of the bunch, but her presence still serves to embolden the rest). chasing each other and doing tricks with pyrotechnics is par for the course every year, the instigator is always ranpo but once atsushi has had a few shots he becomes his worst enabler.
knife throwing apple-on-someone's-head style or, if there's no more fruit to spare, simply with someone (atsushi) t-posing with their back against the fence happens more often than it should given how the activity gets turbo banned by fukuzawa the second anyone other than kyouka wants to try their luck.
upon much begging (from dazai, yosano and to everyone's surprise naomi) he offers himself as the victim once, but his ingrained instinct to catch, dodge or parry the oncoming projectiles turns the game into something else entirely very fast.
buying weird sodas and using them as punishment for absurd games becomes a tradition too (theyâre outside anyway, who cares if they spill half the bottles). cross-yard beer/soda pong with no abilities limit becomes the highlight each year. dazai prefers to observe and heckle rather than participate. he usually talks whoever else decides to sit it out into trying to make the gross sodas drinkable by using them as mixers. with little success (at least vodka makes everything taste like vodka). the one year fukuzawa happens to be drunk enough to be talked into playing he does end up giving the game his full attention though. the resulting damage requires cleaning efforts so epic not even the most hungover of employees gets to sit it out the next day.
