My dear lgbt+ kids, 

Here’s a quick hug for those of you who live in small towns or rural places. 

It can get pretty lonely. “You’re not the only one” is true - but in places like that, you may indeed be the only lgbt+ person you know. 

That can make a lot of things more difficult. It makes it harder to find a partner or friends you can relate to, obviously, but it’s more than that. 

From my experience, never seeing people who are openly queer can really slow down your journey to figuring out your feelings. If you never see anyone who is like you, then it’s hard to believe that it’s okay to be you. 

It doesn’t help that people in rural areas tend to be more “traditional” (which often directly translates to “horribly homophobic and transphobic”) - and while “everyone knows everyone here” sounds cozy, it can make coming-out really hard or even impossible. 

Luckily, we got the option to connect with people now who don’t happen to live close to us. There may be no local lgbt+ community you can feel part of - but you are part of the lgbt+ online community. 

I may not live close to you or even know you in real life - but I support you and think you are lovely the way you are.
